A HP 6515b notebook can be normally restarted and shut down under Windows, but cannot use software to automatically shut down under DOS 7.1 (don't tell me to press the button). Tried many small programs and methods such as shutdown(DOS), off, power, win /z, grub's halt command, etc., but all to no avail. Originally thought it was a problem with the program loading configuration in Config.sys, but after tossing for many days, it still couldn't be solved. PE can also automatically shut down, but DOS just can't. I wonder if any expert has a solution? Is DOS really completely retired?

I don't know if this thread can solve your problem:

Although I don't know how to solve your problem, does DOS have to retire just because it can't be shut down by software? DOS has never been about shutting down by software. You people have been pampered under Windows, wanting everything to be automatic. If it can't be automatic, you can't live anymore?

It is very likely that this computer does not support APM, and you need to use a shutdown software that supports ACPI, such as FDAPM -ACPIOFF.

Although I don't know how to solve your problem, if the software can't shut down DOS, it has to quit...

DOS is originally a underdog, not designed for today's hardware at all. So it's a miracle that DOS has survived ten or fifteen years in the commercial field and is still tenaciously surviving today. Of course, it can't do without fans like you. After testing, Fdapm.com is still not up to the task, the old horse is past his prime. It's really a pity!

To me, it can only be blamed on hardware manufacturers. What they make is non-standard, deliberately squeezing the living space of DOS.
If you have the ability, let them make a piece of hardware that is incompatible with Windows. They wouldn't dare even if they were scared to death. This is a shoddy businessman, and there's no business that isn't shoddy.

首先分析原文中“拥虿”应该是“拥趸”的笔误,“拥趸”的英文是“supporter”或“follower”。

翻译后的内容为:

What is a "supporter"?

This is not that the hardware is incompatible with it, but that DOS was originally designed based on the 8086 architecture, and its support for new hardware expansion has inherent deficiencies. The current X86 platform (except for pure 32-bit Pentium PRO and pure 64-bit IA64), has largely accommodated DOS in terms of hardware (especially the segmented: offset memory access architecture. Generally, CPUs support 64K memory for 16-bit, 4G for 32-bit, and directly use linear memory addresses).

No matter how problematic the design of DOS is, it is the basic industrial standard of PCs. The greatest advantage of PCs is compatibility. Without compatibility, the foundation for survival would not even exist.

Still unable to shut down, causing a system freeze. Pressing ctrl+alt+del can restart.
