Hi! I have some important files and software that need to be kept safely. If I keep them on the hard disk, I'm afraid they may be damaged by malicious viruses or physical damage; if I keep them on floppies, the capacity is too small, and I don't have a CD burner, so I can't burn them to a CD. So I can only choose the second option, that is, keep them on floppies, but they must be compressed, so I can save some floppies that way. WINACE has the highest compression ratio, followed by WINCAB.
Under DOS, it's RAR and AIN.

I think CABARC has the highest compression ratio when used in a DOS window.

Very simple!
Use CAB!
winrar and
winace both have to use the solid feature before their compression ratio is higher than the cab format.
But once you use the solid feature, if a file gets corrupted, everything will be damaged,
and there will be no way to recover it.
But cab archives don't have the solid feature, so if a file has a problem,
you can still use software to extract the good files from it.
At the same time, cab files don't need decompression software to open in systems above win98.

I think winrar is pretty good!!!

I found:

CABARC is first;
ACE 1.2b and RAR 3.11 are second;
PKZIP, AIN, ARJ and the like... are much worse...

But where is the download for CABARC?

The ones I use most often are WINRAR, CABMANAGER, and WINZIP. (Of course I mean when used under WIN.) Among them, CABMANAGER compresses the best. Uploading it here now:

I downloaded WinCAB 1.5.1, but after installing it, as soon as I run it, it gives an error saying that “makecab.exe” is missing. It tells me to copy it from the Win98 installation disc, but that file isn't on the installation disc. What should I do!

What's the use of WinCAB? Isn't CABARC.EXE alone enough to solve everything? It can both create CAB files and extract CAB files too...

Also, where is the “CABARC.EXE” that admin Wengier mentioned? Why can't I find it?

I just downloaded and used CABMANAGER. Its compression ratio really is much higher than the WINACE2.5 I've always been using!!
