When using the "CD Player" that comes with 98, there is progress display, the speakers are plugged into the integrated sound card output but there is no sound, and adjusting the volume by clicking the "Speaker" in the system tray works normally. Winamp is the same, but playing MP3s is normal!
I don't know what the reason is, I've run into this on 2 computers already......

This is because the audio cable between the CD-ROM drive and the sound card is not connected. You need to find one and hook it up. MP3 and VCD transmit information through the IDE bus, so they will have sound.

"The audio cable between the CD-ROM drive and the sound card is not connected" ———— you don't mean the audio output jack on the front panel of the CD-ROM drive, right? Even with an integrated sound card, do I still need to use a separate audio cable to connect the CD-ROM drive (inside the case?)?
—————— I'm really quite a newbie, hehe

If it's a 2000-or-later system, you can also enable digital CD mode for the CD-ROM drive in Device Manager.
Because when playing a normal CD, the CD-ROM drive directly outputs an analog signal, there must be an audio cable connected from the back of the CD-ROM drive to the CD socket on the sound card. If this cable is missing, there will be no sound when playing it the usual way

If you can't be bothered to connect the cable, you can also use Super Jieba's Audio Player to play it; it will also read the data on the CD through the IDE cable.
