At Shiyuzi's request, this afternoon I made a Chinese MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk using PDOS95 as the Chinese character support system. While making it, I found that if you leave out the input method, then after CAB compression the disk space used by PDOS95 actually isn't that large, only a bit over 150KB, much smaller than TW and the others (all without input methods). So PDOS95 is still fairly practical as a Chinese character support system, and the fonts are quite nice too. Everyone download it and give it a try:

Oh, should I also make a set of input methods without phrase libraries?

Sounds good.. I think making a small-sized PDOS95 would also be very nice..

All right then, I'll start making Wubi and full Pinyin input methods without phrase libraries.

Question: has the problem of PDOS95 failing to load completely without a hard disk or under NTFS actually been thoroughly solved now?
There was once an article saying it was related to C:\PDOS.DEF, and that the solution was rather complicated, so I never tried it!
I hope all you DOS experts can solve this problem and let those beautiful fonts truly move onto the boot disk!

1. wengier, what I need now is only a standalone version with the files absolutely required to start pdos95, that is, a version I can load by myself under DOS whenever I need it, removing some unnecessary files so that only io.sys, msdos.sys, command.com, doslfn, pdos95, extrace, findramd and other required files remain, and none of the other auxiliary ones get added, like zeno, killer, ctmouse, etc. I also don't need the files to start 98, as long as it can load pdos95 and doslfn without relying on a hard disk. Please, moderator. I urgently need it!!!!

2. What CAB versions can extrace extract up to, and what software is best for making CAB files? Do we also need to consider whether extrace can unpack higher-version CAB files!!!

The very first Chinese boot disk I made was made with PDOS95!
Also, the startup problem of Pdos95 in a diskless situation was solved long ago!

This PDOS95 boot disk of mine doesn't need a hard disk either! That's not a problem at all.

CTMOUSE, KILLER and the like also count as essential files. If you really don't need them, just delete them yourself.

What I want is to load it by myself under DOS. As soon as I run the batch file, it should load pdos95 and doslfn, and not load any of the other auxiliary files!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Mine is a general-purpose version (that is, a version all of us can use conveniently). If you want a custom version, just make a few simple changes yourself.

My batch file skills aren't good enough, that's why I need the moderator's help!!!!!

Wengier:
In the BIOS, set the hard disk to NONE, and when booting to
Extracting c:\font16.exe
it prompts:
ERROR:Out of memory while processing cabinet file pdos.cab
Cannot use the same drive

Among these, "Cannot use the same drive" is only an informational message, not an error message, but I've already removed it.

What is really worth mentioning is the error message "ERROR:Out of memory while processing cabinet file pdos.cab". After testing, I found that this is actually a BUG in the EXTRACT.EXE program: it cannot properly extract CAB files when there is no hard disk, and it has nothing to do with PDOS itself. Because of this, I switched to compressing PDOS in ZIP format and using PKUNZJR to extract it, and then everything worked normally. Try this one instead:
