I'm installing MS-DOS 7.1 on VM6.0. When the installation path appears, I click Next and get a message that it can't be installed to the path C:\DOS71, and I need to enter a correct path. The note says: No trailing backslash! And don't enter LFN for now. Then I click OK and it goes back to resetting the path, but no matter what path I set, it doesn't work. It's frustrating. Please, DOS experts, help me, thanks.

There is still such a problem. I restarted MSDOS several times and installed it to REROOT. After clicking, the following appears:
Invalid system disk Replace the disk, and then press any key. Pressing any key still shows the above line of information... |

This paragraph means "Cannot install MS-DOS 7.10 to the path C:\DOS71, please enter a correct path. Note: No trailing backslash! (meaning don't write it as C:\DOS71\ like this) And don't enter long filenames for now" Is C:\DOS71 what you entered?按理说 it should be correct, what is the partition of the hard disk in your virtual machine? |

Is the virtual machine hard disk just the hard disk on the host? Do I really have to format the hard disk to FATS? That is, format a dedicated block on the real host's hard disk for installing MSDOS? Also, when installing, does this mean I should choose CANCEL?
MS-DOS is the most widely-used and useful DOS today. It fully supports large hard disks.FAT12/16/32 drives, Long file names (LFN). large memory, Windows GUI, etc (omitted in the middle) Note: Don't install it if the primary partition of your hard drive is an NTFS/HPFS or Ext?partition. |

The virtual machine hard disk is indeed the hard disk on the host, but when the virtual machine is just created, it thinks that the virtual machine hard disk is not formatted. At this time, you need to load a third-party tool in the virtual machine to format the virtual machine hard disk (to install MSDOS, it needs to be formatted to FAT format), and then you can install MSDOS.

I haven't used a virtual machine, so of course the hard disk capacity used by the virtual machine is also on the real hard disk. But I don't know exactly how it's used. Does it occupy a real partition or simulate a partition with a large file like Dbl/DrvSpace? Is the partition format in the virtual machine the same as the real partition format? I think it shouldn't be. Since I haven't used a virtual machine, I don't know how you think the hard disk in your virtual machine is.

In addition, I think you should write it as FATs instead of FATS.

A virtual hard disk does not occupy a real physical partition, but uses a dynamically growing file to simulate a partition.

Can a virtual hard disk occupy a real NTFS physical partition and be simulated as a FATs partition to install MSDOS? The key is this question.

No matter what the format of the real partition is, the virtual hard disk you just created is considered an unformatted hard disk and needs to be formatted in the virtual machine.

Since using a virtual machine, first you need to figure out what exactly the virtual machine virtualizes?
I think you should at least understand: The so-called virtual machine is a real machine virtualized by software. Except that this virtual machine software needs to run in the host environment, in other cases, you should treat this virtualized machine as a real machine, regardless of the host. For example: The virtual machine of course has its own hard disk. Its hard disk is a file in a partition in the host, but you don't need to care where this file is placed. You just need to know that the virtual machine has its own independent hard disk. When installing an operating system in the virtual machine, you also need to partition and format the hard disk just like in a real machine. The partitioning and formatting here have nothing to do with the host. It is not completely correct to say that there is no relationship at all, but it is just that the content of a file in the host has changed. |

Thanks everyone's help, the problem has been solved. It was when checking the hard drive, a prompt to create a new FAT32 hard drive popped up. After clicking OK, REROOT appeared with an invalid hard drive prompt. Press restart, then ESC to boot from the CD. At this time, a FAT32 space on the hard drive had been created, so MSDOS could be installed naturally.

I also encountered this problem. According to what the second floor said, you can re-download the MSDOS of this website.
