After multiple attempts, I finally can access the shared resources of the real host under the DOS system of VMWARE. But I encountered a problem that I don't understand very well. So I want to ask everyone for advice:

On machines with XP and 2003 installed, only after adding the NETBEUI protocol can the shared resources of XP and 2003 be accessed under the DOS system. If the NETBEUI protocol is not added, when using the NET USE command for mapping under DOS, it will prompt ERROR 53, the network path was not found.

On machines with XP and 2003, by default, there is no NETBEUI protocol, only the three protocols of TCP/IP, Microsoft Network Client, and Microsoft Network File and Printer Sharing. XP and 2003 can normally access each other.

But why can't the shared resources of XP and 2003 be accessed under the DOS system?? It must be that XP and 2003 add the NETBEUI protocol????

Is there anyone who can explain it for me????

Oh, the LZ is powerful. I'm a newbie. Why can't I access Windows under DOS? I installed MSDOS 7.10 and also installed Microsoft Network Client 3.0. When I run net view, it always reports an error saying the workstation isn't started. It's frustrating. I don't know what the LZ did. Teach me, thanks in advance.

After testing in VMware virtual machine, it seems that the server does not need the support of the NETBEUI protocol.

But when executing the NET VIEW command, sometimes it succeeds and sometimes it doesn't, I don't know the reason.

Whether the NETBEUI protocol is needed for support, I still need to test further.

You can use the tcp/ip and ipx protocols under DOS to connect to Windows.

It seems that Samba requires NetBIOS support. Later, for NT and above, there are some that can "take shortcuts", for example, you can share folders using the command line net command without installing the sharing component.

Today I have time, reinstalled MS CLIENT 3.0, only installed the TCP/IP protocol, and tested. The result is very happy, sharing is completely no problem, thus indicating that using TCP/IP with DOS is no problem
