China DOS Union

IBM laptop, big 160GB hard drive, installed Windows NT4.0, and got the INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE blue screen..
Some people said that for NT to recognize a large hard drive, you just need to find the NT SP3 sys files and replace them, but I tried that and it didn’t work.
Others said I need to find an SCSI driver and press F6 before installation to load the SCSI driver, but I don’t know whether the hard drive in my IBM T43P is this type or not. I also don’t know what files I need.

What should I do? Does any brother here know?
I’ve been messing with this for two days, and I’ve already searched like crazy online, but with no results.

Even Win 2000 needs SP4 or later before it can support hard drives larger than 137G.

NT 4 simply does not support LBA 48, so it does not support hard drives larger than 137GB.

Also, NT requires the boot partition to be located within the first 8.4GB of the hard drive, and the boot partition must be smaller than 8.4GB.

This problem is basically solved now. But I still find it very strange:

A few years ago I installed NT4 before, and it seemed to be on a large hard drive too (I don’t remember very clearly, maybe it was 80GB), and there was no problem.

NT4’s installer already recognized the large hard drive and even showed all the partitions, so why is it that the installed NT4 can’t handle it? Since there is already a program that can recognize large hard drives, why not put it into the system? I really don’t quite understand!


Now I can just hide the later extended partition(s) (using GRUB, and hide it each time before booting into NT)

NT4 does not support hard drives larger than 137GB. NT 4 does support an 80G hard drive.
