How do I set up Chinese Paladin so it has sound effects? I'm using a Creative AWE 64 GOLD sound card. It has music, but no sound effects. It seems the batch file doesn't need any settings. I changed to an ESS 1688 sound card, and without setting anything in the batch file, both music and sound effects work? Strange? Could it be that the AWE64 is actually worse than the ESS? Could the experts here who have played Chinese Paladin please explain this????? Thanks

Oh.. it's an SB AWE64 Gold sound card.. The one I'm using now is actually an SB AWE64 Value~~ Under pure DOS, it is possible to get the SB AWE64 sound card to produce sound in Chinese Paladin. I've tried it~~

Of course I remember you.. Alright, let me explain. The SB AWE64 sound card is different from ordinary sound cards: it doesn't provide General MIDI sound effects, only the dedicated AWE MIDI effects. But games like Chinese Paladin only support General MIDI effects.. The solution is to use the General MIDI emulator that comes with the SB AWE64 sound card. The specific program is AWEUTIL.COM. Try running AWEUTIL /EM before starting Chinese Paladin.

Of course, after running AWEUTIL /S you also have to run Chinese Paladin's INSTALL and configure the GM settings there...

I also set the system setting in INSTALL to "Sound Blaster + MIDI + CD audio source" Why is there still nothing?

You should know that the MIDI effect of the Creative AWE64-COLD is first-rate.

Try setting it to "Sound Blaster + MIDI". For me, "Sound Blaster + MIDI + CD audio source" also had no sound.. Also, the GM address can't be wrong either.. Just use the default 330/331H..
