China DOS Union

Originally, Soft ICE version 2.8 had to run under MS-DOS 6.22 or below to work successfully; under MS-DOS 7.1 (WIN 98), you had to use the Soft ICE for WIN9x version instead. But now this limit can be broken~~ if you use the IO.sys modified by moderator Wengier, Soft ICE 2.8 (DOS version) can run successfully!!! Using this combination for cracking and debugging programs is undoubtedly the best match!! The Soft ICE for WIN9x version cannot be used to crack DOS programs, but Soft ICE 2.8 (DOS version) can~~

I just studied and looked into it a bit, and finally figured out what was going on! The reason is that the last 30-odd KB Image code section in the IO.SYS file of the DOS that comes with the original 98 (actually, as far as DOS is concerned, it is completely dead code) conflicts with Soft-ICE! In other words, as long as that 30-odd KB of code is not executed, there will be no problem... In my trimmed IO.SYS file, that section of code has already been cleaned out, so there will be no problem. If it is the IO.SYS from the DOS that comes with the original 98, then it can be solved by adding a line, SystemReg=0, to MSDOS.SYS.

I also just tested another Chinese system that could only run under MS-DOS 6.22 before --- ETen Flying Saucer 24 system (you can download it from the Chinese Localization Room) --- using MS-DOS 7.1, and it can run now. Before, no matter what I did, I just couldn't get it to run, but now it can run..... hehe... then there's basically no need to buy ETen Chinese System 2000....
