If your computer has the Win 2000 operating system installed, then by pressing the F8 key, or when the computer cannot start, the computer will enter the Advanced Options menu for starting Win 2000. Here, besides normal startup, you can choose 8 different modes to start Win 2000. So what does each of these modes mean? Let's take a look together:
1. Safe Mode
When you choose Safe Mode to start Win 2000, the system uses only some of the most basic files and drivers (mouse, monitor, keyboard, mass storage, basic video, default system services, and no network connection) to start up. Safe Mode can help you diagnose problems. If no problems appear when starting in Safe Mode, then you can rule out the default settings and minimal device drivers as the cause of the problem. If a newly added device or a changed driver has caused the problem, you can use Safe Mode to remove the device or undo the changes made. If starting in Safe Mode cannot help you solve the problem, then it seems you may need to use the Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) function to repair the system.
2. Safe Mode with Networking
During startup, Win 2000 is started using only the basic files and drivers plus network connections. Its function is basically the same as Safe Mode.
3. Safe Mode with Command Prompt
Starts Win 2000 using basic files and drivers. After logging in, the screen shows the command prompt instead of the Windows desktop, Start menu, and taskbar.
4. Enable Boot Logging
Starts Win 2000 while recording all drivers and services loaded (or not loaded) by the system into a file. The file is named ntbtlog.txt and is located in the windir directory. In Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, and Safe Mode with Command Prompt, a list of all loaded drivers and services will be added to the boot log. This log is very useful for determining the exact cause of system startup problems.
5. Enable VGA Mode
Starts Win 2000 using the basic VGA driver. This mode is very useful when a newly installed video card driver prevents Win 2000 from starting normally. When you start Win 2000 in Safe Mode (Safe Mode, Safe Mode with Networking, or Safe Mode with Command Prompt), the basic video driver is always used.
6. Last Known Good Configuration
Choosing “Start Win 2000 using Last Known Good Configuration” is one way to solve problems (for example, when a newly added driver does not match the hardware). But it cannot solve problems caused by damaged or missing drivers or files. When started this way, Win 2000 only restores the information under the registry key HklmSystemCurrentControlSet. Any changes made in other registry keys remain unchanged.
7. Directory Services Restore Mode
Does not apply to Win 2000 Professional. This is for the Win 2000 Server operating system, and is used only to restore the Sysvol directory and Active Directory directory service on a domain controller.

Starts Win 2000 while sending debugging information to another computer through a serial cable. If you are installing or have already installed Win 2000 on your computer using Remote Installation Services, you may see additional options related to restoring the system using Remote Installation Services.
