Using the Emergency Repair Disk
Using the Emergency Repair Disk
The Emergency Repair Disk (ERD) can help you repair or recover a system that cannot load Windows 2000,
and can also help repair problematic system files and the partition boot sector. This situation usually happens when the hard disk fails
or some system files are damaged or accidentally deleted. System files are the files Windows 2000 uses to load,
configure, and run the operating system. If some system files are missing or damaged, you can use the ERD
to repair them.
The partition boot sector contains information about the file system structure and the commands for loading the operating system. If the computer
is a dual-boot system, the ERD contains the settings that specify which operating system to start and how to start it.
You should update the ERD regularly so that the disk records the latest system settings. The ERD is designed to restart
the computer and repair system files; it does not back up files or programs.
Key points
The ERD should not be used to repair registry problems. The copy of the registry restored by the ERD is the original
registry from after installation.
Creating an Emergency Repair Disk
1.Click the Start button, point to Programs, then Accessories, then System Tools,
and then click Backup.
2.On the Welcome tab, click the “Emergency Repair Disk” button.
3.When prompted, insert a blank, formatted 1.44 MB floppy disk into the floppy drive,
then click “OK”.
4.After it has been created, remove the disk, label it “Emergency Repair Disk,” and put it in
a safe place.
To restore settings from the ERD, you need the Windows 2000 CD, the Windows 2000 setup disks, and
the ERD. During the restore process, press the F1 key for detailed information about some options.
Key points
Because lost or damaged files have been replaced by files from the Windows 2000 CD, all changes made to the system after the initial
installation will be lost.
Restoring settings from the Emergency Repair Disk
1.For Intel-based computers, you can start the computer using either the Windows 2000 setup disks or the Windows 2000
Professional CD.
After Setup finishes copying files from the setup disks, the system will restart and begin text-based
setup mode.
2.At the Welcome to Setup screen, press R to choose whether to repair or recover the Windows 2000
installation.
3.When prompted for the repair type or the required repair options, press R to repair the damaged
Windows 2000 installation.
4.Click “Fast Repair” or “Manual Repair”.
If you want Setup to selectively repair system files, the partition boot sector, or the startup environment,
press M for manual repair. Manual repair does not repair the registry.
If you want Setup to automatically repair system files, the partition boot sector, and the startup environment, press F
for fast repair. The registry restored by Setup is the registry created when Windows 2000 was first installed.
Fast Repair does not require additional user interaction.
5.Follow the prompts, and when prompted, insert the ERD. If you have the original Windows
2000 CD, you can let Setup verify the disk (check for damage).
When the repair is complete, the computer will restart and run Windows 2000
