The Adventures of win2ksvr
Yesterday win2ksvr crashed. During startup it only showed two arrows and then the screen went black. Pressing F8 to load the last known configuration
gave a message saying system32\config\system was damaged.
First I used the emergency repair disk, but it was useless. Then I went into the recovery console to modify it, wanting to overwrite system, but from another machine
I couldn't copy out that file, so that still didn't work. The system was win98se+win2ksvr, so under 98
I installed a program that can read NTFS format, ntfs98.exe. I happened to have made a ghost of the 2k partition, and then used
ghostexp to extract config. Under 98 I used the system from it to overwrite the file under 2k. The two files
were not the same size, but after overwriting it, my 2k came back up, and after running programs, system kept growing larger.
So far I still haven't found any major problems.
