Installing the Recovery Console as a startup option

While Windows is running, insert the Windows 2000 Professional CD into the CD-ROM drive.
When prompted to upgrade to Windows 2000, click "No".
At the command prompt, switch to the CD-ROM drive, and then type the following:
\i386\winnt32.exe /cmdcons

Follow the instructions on the screen.

To run the Recovery Console, you must restart the computer and select the Recovery Console
option from the list of available operating systems.
You must log on as an administrator or as a member of the Administrators group to complete
this step. If the computer is connected to a network, network policy settings may also prevent
you from completing this process.
To view the commands available in the Recovery Console, type "help" at the command prompt.
Enabling the "Automatically log on when using Recovery Console" property in the "Group Policy
snap-in" allows users who are not logged on to run the Recovery Console. This property is
located under "Local Computer Policy/Computer Configuration/Windows Settings/Security Settings/Local Policies/Security Options"
in the console tree.

If the computer cannot start, you can run the Recovery Console from the Windows 2000 Professional CD (if you have a bootable CD-ROM drive)
