How to use security settings during the Windows 2000 upgrade process to prevent the upgrade program from overwriting certain specific directories
During the Win2000 upgrade process, the following two files are used to implement its security settings:
dwup.inf for the Windows 2000 Professional upgrade program
dsup.inf for the Windows 2000 Server upgrade program
If you want to use the upgrade option in the 2000 installer, but you do not want the upgrade program
to overwrite certain specific directories and specific files, then you need to edit the two files above.
The steps are as follows: (Note: the prerequisite is that you have already copied the installation directory \i386
from the 2000 CD to the hard disk)
1. First extract the two files above from the installation directory on your hard disk (depending on which system you are running)
to your system directory %WinDir%\Security\Templates, as follows:
X:\I386>expand.exe dwup.in_ dwup.inf
X:\I386>copy dwup.inf %windir%\security\templates
2. Run mmc.exe from the command line
3. Choose Console\Add/Remove Snap-in..., click Add, choose Security Templates
click Add, click Close, then OK.
4. Expand your Security Templates and select the filename you just copied there
5. Select what you want to change (that is, the file system or registry value you do not want replaced)
6. Double-click the target you do not want replaced, and in the dialog box that appears choose the Ignore option.
7. If you cannot find the file directory you need, then follow the steps below:
a. Right-click Registry or File System, choose Add Key or Add File.
b. Then choose the file or registry value you want protected
c. Click OK. Then accept the default access control list and click OK.
d. Choose not to allow this file or file to be replaced
e. After clicking OK, repeat step 6 above
8. After all modifications are complete, save this security template.
9. Copy this template file back to the installation directory (I assume you are using dwup.inf)
C:\WINNT\security\templates>compress.exe dwup.inf dwup.in_
C:\WINNT\security\templates>copy dwup.in_ X:\I386
