How to Fix a Locked IE Title and Registry
This article mainly discusses several methods used to modify the IE browser and the registry, and the corresponding solutions. This article requires you to know a little about the registry. 1. The IE title bar has been modified Please open your registry tool (enter regedit in the Run menu; if you can't use regedit, see below) Find: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\Main In these two locations, delete the Windows Title key. Then restart your IE. 2. The homepage has been modified (Homepage) This is the simplest one; you can just change it back in IE's settings. 3. A window pops up when Windows starts, and you have to click OK before you can enter Find this in the registry: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Winlogon Delete the LegalNoticeCaption and LegalNoticeText keys there. 4. Ads inserted into the right-click menu in IE Find this in the registry: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Internet Explorer\MenuExt Find the relevant entries and delete them. 5. Comprehensive solution You can create a .reg file with the following contents: REGEDIT4 "Window Title"="Microsoft Internet Explorer" "Start Page"="about:blank" "Window Title"="Microsoft Internet Explorer" "LegalNoticeCaption"="" "LegalNoticeText"="" When you find that any of the first three items have been modified, just run this .reg file once. 6. When your homepage has been modified, and the three homepage buttons “Use Current”, “Use Default”, and “Use Blank” have also turned gray and cannot be changed. Create a .reg file with the following contents: REGEDIT4 "HomePage"=dword:00000000 "Start Page"="about:blank" "Window Title"="Microsoft Internet Explorer" "Start Page"="about:blank" "Window Title"="Microsoft Internet Explorer" Then save it and double-click to import it. 7. The registry has been disabled Then you've really had rotten luck, hehe. Save this section as a file ending in .reg, then double-click to run it: REGEDIT4 "DisableRegistryTools"=dword:00000000 Or: in XP, it may be impossible to import a .reg file. In that case you can run gpedit.msc User Configuration-Administrative Templates-System-Disable registry editing tools-change the setting after that to "disable" 8. Don't know what the registry is? Please go to www.coolstarpage.com/unreg to restore it. Or use magicset, or go to http://www.soft999.com/download1/IESetup.exe to download the IE Anti-Modification Genie. 9. Prevention for Windows 2000 users Please open Administrative Tools / Services, disable the Remote Registry Service, so others cannot modify your registry contents. 10. The ultimate solution! Upgrade!! Upgrade your IE to IE5.5 sp2 or IE6 Upgrade your W2k to sp2 You will not run into this kind of problem. Of course, it's best if you also install dedicated antivirus or firewall software. Or, to be extra safe, set script execution in your IE security settings to prompt. 11. Still having problems? (*&%^#%##^%$^%# You may find it simpler to reinstall the system, or just unplug the network cable.. |
