Remote Access Auto Connection Manager
Microsoft: Creates a connection to a remote network whenever a program references a remote DNS or NetBIOS name or address.
Additional note: Some DSL/Cable providers may need this to handle the login process.

Microsoft: Enables remote users to modify registry settings on this computer. If this service is stopped, the registry can be modified only by users on this computer. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.
Additional note: For security reasons, unless you have a special need, it is best to turn it off, unless you need Remote Assistance to modify your registry settings.

Removable Storage

Secondary Logon

Shell Hardware Detection

Smart Card Helper
Microsoft: Enables support for legacy non-Plug and Play smart card readers used with this computer. If this service is stopped, the computer will not support legacy readers. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.

SSDP Discovery Service
Microsoft: Enables discovery of Universal Plug and Play devices on your home network.
Additional note: As stated above, Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) allows a computer to find and use devices on the network, searching for devices over a network connection through TCP/IP, such as network scanners, digital cameras, or printers. In other words, it is the UPnP function; for security reasons, if you do not use it, you can safely turn it off.

System Event Notification
Microsoft: Tracks system events such as Windows logon, network, and power events. Notifies COM+ Event System subscribers of these events.

Task Scheduler

Additional note: Sets up scheduled automatic tasks, such as scheduled disk scans, scheduled virus scans, updates, etc.

Additional note: Allows remote users to log on to this computer via Telnet. Ordinary people often mistakenly think that if this is turned off they cannot use BBS, but this actually has nothing to do with BBS. For security reasons, unless there is a special need, it is best to turn it off.

Additional note: Does the average person use a UPS? Unless your power supply supports this function, just turn it off.

Universal Plug and Play Device Host
Microsoft: Provides support for hosting Universal Plug and Play devices.
Additional note: Used to detect and install Universal Plug and Play (UPnP) devices such as digital cameras or printers.

Volume Shadow Copy
Microsoft: Manages and implements volume shadow copies used for backup and other purposes. If this service is stopped, shadow copies cannot be used for backup, and backup may fail. If this service is disabled, any services that explicitly depend on it will fail to start.
Additional note: As stated above, this is for backup-related stuff, for example the MS Backup program needs this service.

WebClient

Windows Image Acquisition (WIA)

Windows Installer

Windows Management Instrumentation (WMI)
Microsoft: Provides a common interface and object model to access management information about the operating system, devices, applications, and services. If this service is stopped, most Windows software will not function properly. If this service is disabled, all services depending on it will fail to start.
Additional note: As stated above, this is a service that provides a standard infrastructure for monitoring and managing system resources, so you have no choice but to leave it alone.

Windows Management Instrumentation Driver Extensions
Microsoft: Provides management information to and from drivers.
