In order to display the startup message "Starting MS-DOS" when booting DOS 7.x, I used an editor to modify "Starting Windows 98 ..." in the IO.sys file. I used overwrite mode and did not change the code length, but after rebooting it hangs before showing the above message. Please advise, thanks!

Just take a look at the modified + slimmed-down IO.SYS in that MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk I made, and you'll know.
