N reasons not to buy a car
Buy a car! That's what fashion demands. Of course, people who don't buy one have to find a reason for themselves. Here are some excerpts, so everyone can take what they need.
The greatest reason: -- environmental protection!
At a time when the earth's resources are becoming increasingly scarce, as a person of the new century, fully understanding the meaning of environmental protection and truly starting with oneself is something worthy of admiration. Under the other person's reverent gaze, you can also quote authorities and lecture him on how much automobile exhaust pollutes the urban environment, the greenhouse effect, the ozone hole... and all the rest. Your insistence on not sprinkling another handful of salt on the wounds of Mother Earth, already covered with scars, is who knows how many times nobler than those environmentally conscious ladies who wear fur coats and use paper tissues.
The most patriotic reason: -- lightening the burden!
The more cars there are, the more crowded the roads become, the greater the pressure on the traffic department, the less rest our police comrades get, and municipal roads, overpasses, and the like have to be widened or newly built again. How much state money would that cost! Our country is big, its foundations are thin, and there are many places that need money. If we can save some, better to save some.
The reason that loves the Party most: -- fighting corruption!
Once a municipal project goes out to bid, whether it's paving a road, building a bridge, digging a tunnel, or whatever, wouldn't that mean investments of tens of millions? And which of those could do without corrupt elements sticking their hands in? In the end, when they're exposed, which one doesn't get expelled from the Party? It isn't easy for the Party to train a cadre, so if they're wiped out one by one by sugar-coated bullets, who could that possibly answer to? Without those projects there would be no sugar-coated bullets, and without buying cars there would not be so many projects.
  The noblest reason: -- support!
Isn't there a song that goes like this: "The structure of the Chinese character for person is mutual support..." Those who got rich first should help the comrades behind them, so everyone can become prosperous together! When you're driving your little car, speeding along the broad road of socialism, have you ever noticed the empty taxis brushing past you? And the taxi drivers' eyes searching all around? One more person buying a car means one fewer person taking a ride, and the taxi driver has one more bit of survival crisis, while his family gains one more trace of instability. People laid off inland can come to the coast to drive, but if the drivers themselves get laid off, where are they supposed to go? So: better take a taxi than buy a car!
The most selfish reason: -- freedom!
The first thing after buying a car is becoming a driver. After you've driven for a while and the novelty wears off, you'll find you've become a full-time chauffeur. Picking up your wife to and from work and taking the kids to school become daily required courses; when your wife goes shopping with friends, when the seven aunts and eight female relatives from your mother-in-law's side come visiting, when you gather with classmates and friends, you have to work overtime on weekends; taking neighbors and coworkers to the hospital when they're sick counts as helping others. You spend much more time on the road than before, but none of it is for your own business, and you aren't even allowed to refuse a fare, otherwise you'll receive punishment even harsher than a taxi driver's.
The sunniest reason: -- keeping fit!
To go upstairs there's the elevator; to go to work you get on the machine. As outdoor activity decreases, all kinds of office syndromes have long troubled white-collar workers bent over their desks. Medical proof shows that maintaining a certain amount of walking time every day helps physical health, can restrain the formation of beer bellies and bowlegs, and reduce the growth of fat around the waist. This reason applies only to comrades whose workplace and home are within two stops of each other, meaning walking time does not exceed fifteen minutes, and who are usually too busy at work to have time to go to the gym.
The fussiest reason: -- not to my taste!
BMW is too flighty (not steady enough, used by the underworld in film and TV works), Mercedes is too risky (afraid of ending up with that ox cart from Wuhan), Buick is too long, Sail is too short, Passat is too expensive, Bora is too narrow, Jetta is too old, Hongqi is ugly, Changan loses face, Xiali is too cheap, Geely is pretty ordinary, Honda has defects... I've looked at so many, and there just isn't one I like.
The most NB reason: -- no money!
The power of this reason is the Nth power of the sum of all the reasons above. After you bring up the reasons above, maybe there will still be hard-persuading car salesmen trying to convince you, such as suggesting you change the way you love your country or the Party; have the state provide subsidies to taxi drivers while asking you to care about the lives of auto factory workers; saying people must not be selfish; asking you to choose an environmentally friendly ride and tailor a satisfactory model for you, and so on. But once you throw out this reason, I guarantee everyone will shut up, because nobody is going to provide the funds for you to buy a car.
我很笨但我很好学。
