Title: A few logic questions, very interesting
Posted at: BBS Shuimu Tsinghua Station (Sun Mar 17 04:13:53 2002)
These answers are all very short, simple, and naturally reasonable. Maybe you've seen them before, or you'll think of them quickly. So ag
ain, please don't put the answers in the title, and give those who haven't seen them a chance to try.
1. A father and his child were driving in a desolate wilderness -- there were only the two of them in the car. Both were very anxious and ter
rified, deeply uneasy. At last they saw a gas station. The father stopped and said to the child: "I'll go buy something to eat,
you stay here and don't move. If anything seems wrong, scream right away!!" "Okay, please come back quickly -- I'm really scared"
20 minutes later, the father returned from the store to the car. His beloved child was already dead, and there was one more person in the car
-- someone neither the father nor the child had ever seen before -- this was the one who caused the child's death, and his hands were covered
with the dead person's blood.
There was no criminal act here. How do you explain it?
2. They're both one-cent coins, so why are 1988 pennies worth more than 1949 pennies?
3. A person left his home, turned a few corners, stopped at a few places, and was getting ready to go home. But then he discovered
that nearby there was a masked person waiting for him, holding something that frightened him. Realizing
the danger, he stayed where he was and didn't go back home first.
What's going on here? Again, there is no criminal act. The exact same scene happens thousands upon thousands of times every day all over the world.
There are some specific places in China where this happens too, though not as many as in some other countries.
4. What is the only kind of crime -- in both China and America, and I think in any country (this really is
an act prohibited by law, and the police will stop you from doing it, by force if necessary) -- such that if you really
commit this crime and are found out, you will not receive any legal punishment? (The answer is not "overthrowing the government" -- it's not
that complicated.)
(These were extra-credit questions from my high school biology teacher -- I went to high school in America. Every exam he would give a
few like this. Very interesting -- I don't remember DNA/RNA/meiosis/mitosis and so on anymore, but I still haven't forgotten these ^
_^.)
