I haven't used it yet. I hardly use my 98 anymore either.

It has to be admitted that some AC97 sound cards are rather troublesome. For example, I have a SiS7012 AC97 sound card, and I couldn't get it driven under pure DOS. I never use it now, either; I use Sound Blaster PCI 128 and ESS688 instead.

I still haven't tried what the effect is like playing multimedia under pure DOS. My sound card is also AC97, VIA's.

VIA sound cards are very easy to drive under DOS. The site's "Drivers" section has its driver.
