The FDISK command in MS-DOS is not backward-compatible. Last night I used the FDISK from a 98 boot disk to partition a hard disk (FAT16), then used its FORMAT to format it. But when I booted with a DOS 6.22 boot disk, it actually said it couldn't find the hard disk. Then I ran the DOS 6.22 FDISK command and it still couldn't partition it either (it also said the hard disk didn't exist). In the end I had to use other tools to repartition it before DOS 6.22 would recognize the hard disk. Sigh, seriously, it had me running around for nothing for quite a while.

Seems like it's a FORMAT problem, right? Not an FDISK problem.

Generally speaking, if there's no problem with the partition, DOS 6.22 should be fine. Post the DOS 6.22 FDISK error message.

Then if you use an MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk, can it find the hard disk?

It's not "not backward-compatible", it's that old stuff can't recognize new stuff. If DOS 6.22 partitioned and formatted it and then 98 couldn't recognize it, that would be called "not backward-compatible", right???

Use 6.22 to partition and format it; 98 uses LBA mode.
