This is a known issue with VMware itself. As far as I know, someone once asked the developers to fix it in the VMware official forum, but there was no result. The only way to use the sound card of VMware under DOS is to change the sound card simulated by VMware to SB16 (but MIDI function is not supported). The specific method is to change sound.virtualDev = "es1371" in the VMware virtual machine configuration file.vmx to sound.virtualDev = "sb16".

There is also a simple question. If playing games, do you need to install the graphics card driver to get a better picture effect? Does the graphics card need a driver under DOS?

For ordinary SB16 sound cards, no need to load any driver programs, just set environment variables directly (for example, enter in VMware: SET BLASTER=A220 I5 D1 H7 T6). Regarding graphics card drivers, usually no need to install under DOS, but provided by each application itself.

Simply using DOSBox for gaming is quite good. The current 0.72 CVS version runs games like Doom, Blood, Quake 1, etc. at a speed that is still acceptable. It seems to be a bit faster than in virtual machines.

I am asking if a graphics card needs to install drivers under DOS? But it seems to be another question. It doesn't match the title
