My C drive is FAT32 and already has Windows 2000 installed. The D drive is NTFS, with XP installed.
Now I want to install DOS 7.1 on the C drive as well. Would a direct installation succeed?

Absolutely! In your current situation, after installing DOS 7.1, just use BOOTPART to restore the XP boot loader on the C drive.

Instead of installing DOS, it's better to use grub to boot a floppy disk image. More convenient.
