My hard disk is a small-capacity one, with a Win98 system installed. After running it on a friend's P3 machine and bringing it back, it stopped working properly. On boot, everything is normal through the detection screen, but it can't enter the Win98 system. It shows the prompt "updating ESCD", and then just freezes. The system prompts me to insert a "system disk". I inserted a WINME boot disk, but it's still not right. Asking all you experts, what kind of boot disk or system disk should I use?

Which one? Is his boot disk any different? What caused this?

When booting, can the system get as far as reading the boot disk?

Yes, and after inserting the boot disk it can read it normally too, it's just that under DOS it can't find the C drive

The only way is to repartition, format, and reinstall on the original machine, then it'll be fine.
I've run into this too: if you set up the system on a small hard disk using a newer machine, when you put it back into the original machine it just won't boot.
Seems like different motherboards have some kind of difference in how they handle partitions on small hard disks.
Just redo it.

I've tried this too. A system partitioned on my Celeron 300 couldn't be recognized on a P5 133, had to do it all over again.
