While we are enjoying the fun brought by WinME, we also find that WinME no longer supports DOS startup like Win9x. Although Windows replacing DOS will become the mainstream operating system, the DOS environment is still very useful sometimes. There are so many good small tools in DOS that are really nostalgic, especially when dealing with system crashes, DOS plays a huge role. The abandonment of the DOS mode by WinME means that it will no longer use the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files, but some old hardware just needs the support of these two files. This is really a headache. The price of using a new system is to give up the old system. Can we have both?
Fortunately, there is a small tool called Real DOS-Mode Patch for Windows Me that can solve our troubles. This program can make the DOS mode in WinME reappear and allow the coexistence of old and new systems. When using this tool, everyone needs to be reminded that since this program does not provide an uninstaller, it is best to make necessary backups before use.
First, go to download (ftp://www.newhua.com/mfddme13.zip) this file. The program is not large, less than 10K. Extract the file and put it in a temporary directory, such as path.
Copy the three files io.sys, command.com, and regenv32.exe to this temporary directory. io.sys is located in the root directory of drive C, command.com is in C:\windows, and regenv32.exe is in C:\windows\system. Also back up the three files for recovery in case of problems.
Remove all attributes of the three files and modify them in the "Properties" right-click menu of the file. Before modifying, note down what attributes the three files have, because their attributes need to be restored later.
Run the Winmedos.com file in the path directory to complete the modification of the files. Then copy the three files to their original respective directories and modify them back to their original attributes.
Next, you need to modify the CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files. Add the line "DEVICE=C:\WINDOWS\IFSHLP.SYS" in CONFIG.SYS, and add "C:\WINDOWS\WIN.COM" at the end of the AUTOEXEC.BAT file. After saving, the modification of the DOS mode under WinME is completed.
Restart the system, and press the "Shift+F8" combination key during startup to directly enter the real DOS mode.
If you find any problems during use, just restore the backed-up files to their original directories. Finally, it should be noted that this program is only suitable for the 4.90.3000 version of WinME. This version number can be viewed in the "System Properties" in the "Control Panel".
