alerter - error alarm, junk

application layer gateway service - a service that provides support for third-party network sharing/firewalls. Some firewalls/network sharing software need it. Takes up 1.5MB of memory.

application management - used to set up, publish, and remove software services.

automatic updates - Windows automatic update, damn, get lost!

background intelligent transfer service - this service was originally used to implement information transfer between HTTP1.1 servers. Microsoft says it supports resumed transfers for Windows updates

clipbook - used by LAN computers to share pasted/clipped contents. (Damn, they really thought of that!)

com+Event system - some COM+ software needs it. Check your c:\program files\ComPlus Applications directory; if there's nothing there, you can turn this service off.

COM+Event system application - same as above

COmputer browser - a service used to browse LAN computers, but turning it off doesn't affect browsing! Junk

cryptographic services - used during Windows updates to verify Windows file fingerprints. I only turn it on when updating.

DHCP client - people with static IP need it (xDSL etc.), dial-up cats don't!!

Distributed link tracking client - used in a LAN to update link information. For example, if there's a file on computer A and a link to it on B, when the file is moved this service will

update the information. Takes up 4MB of memory.

Distributed Transaction coordinator - pointless stuff.

DNS Client - DNS resolution service... pointless~~

Error reporting service - error reporter, reports Windows errors to Microsoft, pointless~~~~~~~~

＊Event Log - system log recording service, very useful for finding system problems.

Fast user switching compatibility - fast multi-user switching service... pointless

help and support - help, pointless, still more pointless help... haha

Human interface device access - supports "idiotic" computer peripherals... like volume buttons on the keyboard, etc...

IMAPI CD-burning COM service - XP CD burning service. If you use software, you don't need it. Takes up 1.6MB of memory.

Indexing service - that terrifying XP slowdown thing!!! Off off off!!!

Internet Connection Firewall(ICF)......... - XP firewall... turn it off if you don't use it.

IPSEC Services - ordinary users won't even come close to this.

Logical Disk manager - disk management service... it'll notify you when needed, so usually turn it off.

Logical Disk manager administrative service - same as above.

messenger - not MSN. Turn it off if you don't want to be harassed. Note: Yaoci uses this.

MS software shadow copy provider - useless, supposedly for backups... I don't think it's useful at all.

Net Logon - used for logging into a Domain Controller, ordinary users turn it off quick!

Netmeeting remote desktop sharing - uses netmeeting to share the computer... dizzying! Off!!

Network Connections - stuff needed for Internet/LAN access!

Network DDE - used together with clipbook, pointless~~~~

Network DDE DSDM - same as above

Network Location Awareness - may be needed if you have network sharing or ICS/ICF. (server side)

NT LM Security support provider - stuff used by the telnet service, off!!

NVIDIA Driver Helper service - nvidia graphics card helper, off!

PDEngine - perfectdisk engine

PDScheduler - perfectdisk scheduling service

PerFORMance logs and alerts - records machine operating status and regularly writes logs or sends alerts. The content may be too technical, so... decide for yourself.

＊Plug and Play - automatically detects newly installed hardware, plug and play, leave it on~~~

Portable media serial number - absolutely useless, pointless to the extreme.

Print Spooler - used by printers; I only turn it on when printing.

Protected Storage - stores local passwords and Internet service passwords, including the "AutoComplete" function when filling forms.

QoS RSVP - off! That's that 20% QoS

Remote access auto connection manager - broadband users/network sharing may need this!!

Remote desktop help session manager - remote help service, stupid as hell, takes up 4MB of memory.

＊Remote Procedure Call (RPC) - core system service!

Remote Procedure Call LOCATOR - this one isn't very useful, manages the RPC database service, takes up 1MB of memory.

remote registry - remote registry running/modification. Big security hole, why aren't you turning it off yet!!

removable storage - generally not used, for tape backup.

routing and remote access - haha... if you don't know, turn it off!

secondary logon - gives users other than administrator specified operation rights. Dizzy~~~

security accounts manager - needed by things like Protected Storage and IIS Admin.

server - needed for LAN file/printer sharing.

shell hardware detection - gives some setups auto-start, like memory sticks and some CD drives, etc.

smart card - off! 1.4MB memory

smart card helper - off!

SSDP Discovery service - no hardware really uses this service...

system event notification - records user logon/logoff/restart/shutdown information... who cares about that...

system restore service - system restore service, a monster that eats resources and memory... though it's useful sometimes, decide for yourself.

task scheduler - Windows scheduling service, junk.

TCP/IP NetBIOS helper - if your network doesn't use Netbios or WINS, turn it off.

Telephony - dial-up service. If your broadband doesn't use dialing, then turn it off.

telnet - big security hole, this was the first thing I turned off. It has nothing to do with the telnet command in DOS. 2MB memory.

terminal services - needed to implement remote login to the local computer, fast user switching, and remote desktop. If you don't use these features, turn it off.

themes - stuff that dresses up XP. If you don't want it too fancy, turn it off.

uninterruptible power supply - used by power outage protection equipment... turn it off if you don't have that.

universal plug and play device host - same as SSDP Discovery Service, useless.

upload manager - a service used to transfer files between server and client. Simple file transfer doesn't need this!

volume shadow copy - same as MS Software Shadow Copy Provider, useless.

webclient - might be related to future .net technology. To be safe, I turned it off for good!

＊Windows Audio - controls the sound you hear. Turn it off and there'll be no sound!!

Windows Installer - Windows MSI installation service, recommended to set it to manual.

windows image acquisition (WIA) - used by some digital cameras and scanners. My scanner seems not to need it.

＊Windows Management Instrumentation - a pretty important service, it handles "service dependencies", but weird problems will appear if you turn it off.

windows management instrumentation driver extensions - not as important as the one above, recommended to set it to manual.

windows time - online time synchronization... dizzying

wireless zero configuration - wireless network setup service... not many people use it, right...

WMI perFORMance adapter - off! Takes up 6MB of memory.

＊Workstation - a lot of services depend on this service; it supports networking and printer/file sharing.
