I Want to Laugh Across the World
Only human beings can laugh. Trees will also “bleed” when injured, and birds and beasts will also howl and cry out because of pain and hunger, yet only I possess the gift of laughter, able to laugh heartily at any time. From now on, I will cultivate the habit of laughing.
Laughter helps digestion, laughter can relieve stress, and laughter is the secret recipe for longevity. Now I have finally mastered it.
I want to laugh across the world.
I laugh at myself, because people who think too highly of themselves often look ridiculous. I must never fall into that mental trap. Though I am the greatest miracle of the Creator, am I not also just a drop in the ocean? Do I really know where I came from and where I am going? The things I care about now—ten years from now, will they not seem foolish? Why should I let trivial matters happening now trouble me? In this long river of history, how many sunsets can leave behind a memory?
I want to laugh across the world.
When I am offended by others, when I encounter things that do not go my way, I only know how to shed tears and curse—how can I possibly laugh? There is a profound saying that I will practice again and again until it sinks into my very bones, so that I may always keep a good state of mind; this saying has been passed down from ancient times, and it will accompany me through hard times and keep my life in balance. That saying is: “This too shall pass.”
I want to laugh across the world.
All things in the world will, in the end, become the past. When I am exhausted in body and mind, I comfort myself: this too shall pass; when I become smug because of success, I remind myself: this too shall pass; when I am destitute and down and out, I tell myself: this too shall pass; when I am rolling in wealth, I also tell myself: this too shall pass. Yes, those who built the pyramids in days gone by have long since died, buried beneath the cold stone, and one day the pyramids too will be buried beneath the sand. If everything in the world will ultimately come to nothing, why should I haggle over today's gains and losses?
I want to laugh across the world.
I will adorn today with laughter, I will light up the night with song; I will no longer search bitterly for happiness, I will forget sorrow in my busy work; I will enjoy today's joy, for it cannot be stored like grain, nor does it grow more fragrant with age like fine wine. I do not live for the future; I sow today and reap today.
I want to laugh across the world.
In laughter, everything reveals its true nature. I laugh at my failures, and they will turn into the clouds of dreams; I laugh at my successes, and they return to their true form; I laugh at evil, and it departs far from me; I laugh at kindness, and it flourishes. I will use my smile to influence others. Though my purpose is selfish, this truly is the way to success, because a frown will make customers abandon me.
I want to laugh across the world.
From now on, I will shed tears only because of happiness, because tears of sorrow, regret, and frustration are worthless; only smiles can bring wealth, and kindness can build a castle.
I will no longer allow myself, because I have become important, clever, respectable, or powerful, to forget how to laugh at myself and at everything around me. In this respect, I want to be like a child forever, because only by becoming a child again can I respect others; and only by respecting others can I avoid becoming self-righteous.
I want to laugh across the world.
As long as I can laugh, I will never be poor. This too is a gift, and I will waste it no more. Only in laughter and joy can I truly savor the taste of success. Only in laughter and joy can I enjoy the fruits of labor. If not, I will fail, because joy is the fine wine that adds flavor. To enjoy success, one must first have joy, and laughter is its bridesmaid.
I want to be happy.
I want to succeed.
