Some Things Are Not as They Seem

Two traveling angels stopped to spend the night in the home of a wealthy family. The family was rude and refused to let them stay in the comfortable guest room, but instead found a corner for them in the cold basement. When they were making the bed, the older angel noticed a hole in the wall and fixed it. The young angel asked why, and the old angel replied, "Some things are not as they seem."

The next night, the two angels came to a very poor farmer's home. The couple treated them warmly, took out their only little food to entertain the guests, and then gave up their own bed for the two angels. The next morning, the two angels found that the farmer and his wife were crying because their only source of livelihood, a cow, had died. The young angel was very angry and asked the old angel why this happened. The first family had everything, and the old angel helped them fix the wall hole, but the second family, although so poor, treated the guests warmly, and the old angel did not prevent the cow from dying.

"Some things are not as they seem," the old angel replied. "When we spent the night in the basement, I saw from the hole in the wall that there were piles of gold bars inside the wall. Because the owner was confused by greed and did not want to share his wealth, so I filled the hole. Last night, the Angel of Death came to call the farmer's wife, and I let the cow replace her. So some things are not as they seem."
