First of all, I'm on someone else's computer visiting this forum right now. My own computer can't get online here.
The reason is: when I go to forums like this that require cookies, it just won't work. The browser gives a message like, "Cookies are required. If they are disabled, you will not be able to access this site." Then IE's status bar keeps refreshing nonstop, as if it's trying hard to get in, but it never does. The message stays the same, and I just can't get into the forum. Generally, forums like Dvbbs, I just can't get into them. I understand what that means, but cookies are not disabled on my machine. I used to be able to get in all the time, and never had anything like this before. I've used a lot of computers to get online too, and never ran into this kind of problem.
I never had this happen before, but after reinstalling the system it stopped working. First I installed 98, no good. Then I formatted and installed 98 again, still no good. Then I installed 2000 on top of 98, still no good. Installing IE6.0 still didn't help. I also adjusted the browser's security level and IE 6.0's privacy settings, still no good. Even enabling all cookies doesn't work. Even if I lower all the security settings to the minimum, it still doesn't work.
Generally, things like "bbs.域名.com" or "域名/bbs(asp)" can't be entered. It always stops at that message and won't go in. What exactly is the problem here??????? Help!!!!!!!

My guess is there's a bit of a problem with the system. Try a different system or a different browser, for example Opera or Lynx.

I used win98 before and never had this kind of thing happen. This time it just stopped working after reinstalling, and then adding win2000 still didn't help.
I used IE before and it was fine. Adding IE6.0 still didn't help. I also changed to some browser starting with the letter "o" or something, still no good.
What could this problem be?? Could it be a hardware problem??

Could it be that your local telecom bureau has blocked it?? If it worked before and doesn't work now, and none of the hardware has changed, then that really makes no sense.

How did you reinstall the system, was it a clean install or an overwrite install?

What antivirus software did you install?

Logically it shouldn't be a COOKIES problem. Could it be that yours doesn't support ASP, or that there's a virus? Because you only formatted the C drive, there may be a virus in the other partitions, and after you reinstall the system, the virus is still causing trouble.

How about trying a low-level format??

Turn off the antivirus software... or uninstall it and try again....

I reinstalled win98 after a low-level format. After installing the drivers I went online. I didn't install any other software at all. And let me say it again: I had been using the same computer all along, with the same hardware (never added or removed any hardware), and I had never run into anything like this before. It's just that the win98 installation CD is one I just bought.
Right now I'm afraid it's a hardware problem, but what hardware going bad would affect my browsing websites?
It used to support asp before. (I can't even get into my own forum now!!!) After a low-level format there shouldn't be any serious virus, and besides, what kind of virus would only stop me from browsing websites that require cookies?

Since you've already done a low-level format, then it probably isn't some other problem. Try a different installation CD.
Also, don't do a low-level format casually. For ordinary computer problems, when would you ever need a low-level format?

In IE's Tools - Options, check whether "Security" is all at the default values, then under "Advanced", put check marks in front of the SSL2.0/SSL3.0 items and the like. Also, try upgrading to IE6.0SP1.

It hadn't worked for days, and yesterday when I turned on the computer and tried again, it worked. Damn it, I didn't touch a thing!! Sigh~ I really don't understand what happened...
Thanks to the friend above, after installing the system all those were at the defaults, and I hadn't touched them either. Anyway, it just absolutely wouldn't work...

Thanks to the friend above that too. I only did the low-level format because the hard drive had bad sectors, so that wasn't related.
