Moderator, experts:
Please help your little brother here. The CD-ROM drive on my laptop is broken, and I want to install WIN98 under DOS by using a direct two-PC connection. But when I boot with the DOS 7.10 boot disk, this appears:
NTLDR is missing
Pless any key to restart

But after I press any key, the same prompt still appears!
My laptop is a Toshiba 2800, and I made drive C 10 GB.
(I get the same prompt when booting with DOS 6.22 too!)
Also, besides installing WIN98 by direct two-PC connection, what other method can I use to install WIN98 on my laptop (with the CD-ROM drive already broken)?

Thanks, everyone!

Are you running a dual-boot system? Do you have another system installed on another partition, like Win2000?
I'm baffled. I took a careful look at your post and still can't find any useful information.
You should explain:
1。Your NB's partition layout (including partition formats) and what systems are installed.
2。Is your floppy drive working?
3。Did you set it in CMOS to boot from the floppy drive??
4。Do you know how to directly connect two computers under DOS?

Normally, if you boot with a DOS 7.10 boot disk, the above prompt should not appear. So I'm baffled.

Are you running a dual-boot system? Is there a system like Win2000 installed on another partition?
RE: My computer is not dual-boot. The entire 20G hard disk has been repartitioned, and there is no system of any kind on it!

You should explain:
1。Your notebook's partition situation (including partition format) and system installation status.
RE: I booted the machine with a Win98 boot disk, then used fdisk to repartition the hard disk (FAT16 format). C: was allocated 10G, and D: was allocated 9G. Only after partitioning did I discover that the CD-ROM drive was broken, so there is no system installed on it at all!

2。Is your floppy drive usable?
RE: My floppy drive works, because I can boot the machine with a Win98 boot disk!

3。Have you set it in CMOS to boot from the floppy drive??
RE: I already set it in COMS to boot from the floppy drive!

4。Do you know how to directly connect two machines under DOS?
RE: I looked at some articles and have a rough idea, because DOS 6.22 or above has to be installed first!

Thank you for your suggestions and reply. I hope you and the other experts can help me again based on the situation above. Is it that DOS 6.22 or Gray DOS 7.10 does not support large hard disks? Or is there some other reason?

DOS 7.10 certainly supports large hard disks.

I think it is caused by another reason, namely that this DOS boot disk was not made correctly. In other words, the floppy still has the WinNT boot sector on it, rather than DOS 7's.

Yes, I tried it. The same prompt appears there too! Does that mean I made my DOS 7.10 boot disk incorrectly? I used winimage to write MSDOS710.IMG to drive A:?! Please advise how to make a DOS710 boot disk?

Thanks!!!!

Sheesh, after all this, you were using a win2000 boot disk to boot, right?!
(Can't be sure, because you didn't clearly explain the system situation on your computer before repartitioning... )

At first I formatted the floppy on another machine running WIN2000, then made the DOS 7.10 boot disk there! The machine would not boot! Now, following your and wengier's advice, I reformatted the floppy again under WIN98, and remade the DOS 7.10 boot disk under WIN98. Now it really can boot the machine! Thank you! ^_^
But now there is another problem: how do I install the DOS 7.10 made by moderator wengier? :(I really am a newbie! Sorry to trouble everyone!
