To read and write NTFS partitions under DOS, do you have to first install a tool like dos4ntfs in 2000/XP?

You just need to have the software ntfsdos under DOS. No need to install any dos4ntfs under 2000.

For example, try my MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk, it has NTFS support in it:

One partition shows an error when reading, but reading and writing on the other partitions are all OK. I checked the disk for the partition that showed the error under XP, but didn't find any errors, so what could be the reason? This partition doesn't have a system installed either, it's just used to install programs. Also, what are autochk.exe and ntoskrnl.exe used for? They won't let me use them either under DOS or under XP.

These two files may just be meant to be called by the main program and can't be run by themselves. (Just my guess.) Hehe...
If no error was found under XP, then I guess there isn't any error. Sometimes software like this can make mistakes.
