Hello everyone, I'd like to ask you experts a favor. What happened to my hard drive? I'm really depressed right now.

Here's what happened: last night I had just gotten a Windows 2003, and the installation went smoothly, but then I found my machine wasn't doing so well, so I installed 98 back again. While playing a game, it crashed, and on boot it no longer shows anything like: MAXTOR plus the exact model. Now it shows: MAXTOR ATHENAWAH21PBZ.

It gives this prompt: slave hard disk fail, press F1 to enter. The system can't find the hard drive anymore. In the BOIS it can find the hard drive, and it shows as: maxtor ATHENA.

Under DOS it also can't find the hard drive. FDISK also says it can't find the hard drive. What should I do? Thanks, everyone.

What format are your partitions using?

NTFS. Here's the situation: before, I was using two drives, both connected to one data cable,

the one that's having problems now is a 20G drive, split into two partitions, one FAT and one NTFS.

Oh... it can't even detect the FAT partition? Try using dm and see whether it can detect the hard drive...

Looks like if things go badly, your hard drive may be dead. It's best to try it in another machine. Since the BIOS already can't identify the hard drive correctly, then it has nothing to do with whatever partition issue comes afterward.

DM can't find the drive either. Is there any other way?
MAXTOR ATHENAWAH21PBZ.

Why can't it find my hard drive's model anymore?
Did it get hit by some kind of bomb or something? A hard drive lock or whatever.

My luck is just that good, it just went out of warranty. I'm going crazy. Big brother, help me out, please. Is there really no other good way?

Not trying to discourage you, but there's probably no way out. Hard drives are generally one year replacement and two years warranty. Has yours been over 3 years already?

Little brother, if your BIOS can recognize the Maxtor model, then this hard drive should still be salvageable. If you're in Shanghai, I can
help you fix it.

Using it for that long is already pretty good! My Maxtor only lasted a year and a half.
