System booting is a very important aspect of DOS today. Although grub4dos is not a component of DOS, it is still a force in system booting. I’ve noticed that there are more and more discussions about grub4dos now, so I feel it seems necessary to create a dedicated grub4dos discussion section. There are already good documents and learning materials on the forum, and if a grub section can be created, then these documents can be pinned. If a grub section is created, the site admin can move the previous grub posts into the grub section, making them easier for everyone to look up.

Isn’t there an “Other Discussion Area”? I think it could be placed under that, alongside the other three discussion areas.

The name could be: grub4dos Discussion Area, and the description text could say: Other boot management software can also be discussed here.

Would it be okay if the new section were called “GRUB for DOS & NTLDR and Other Boot Management Software Discussion Area” (it feels like as a section name, “grub4dos” doesn’t seem as eye-catching as the wording “GRUB for DOS & NTLDR”)?

The name for NTLDR seems a bit outdated; now it seems everyone prefers to just call it grub for dos in general, and the current grldr is not only for ntldr, but can also be used as a no-emu-mode CD boot image (which has nothing to do with NTLDR anymore). Besides, NTLDR has already been phased out by Microsoft, so calling it for NTLDR is somewhat outdated. So I think changing it to the following would be about right:

I suggest the site admin arrange for all the original moderators of the boot disk room to also serve part-time in the grub section. Of course, new moderators can also be added.

I support splitting Grub for DOS out into a separate section for concentrated discussion of this kind of issue.
Recently I’ve been making a dual-boot DOS & WinPE USB drive, and I’ve run into a lot of questions. I urgently need to deepen my understanding and use of Grub for DOS.

Where’s the free and open GNU spirit?

GRUB for DOS is one kind of boot management software, but other boot management software does not necessarily run under DOS, so maybe it would be fine to put it in the “Other Discussion Area.”

There really do not seem to be many topics in “DOS Real-Time Systems & Embedded Technology (Embedded Room),” and merging it with the DOS Development Room might not be a bad idea either. But I wonder whether moderator Seekfor would have any objections to that?

My personal opinion: for sections that already exist, let them develop naturally. When they were created in the first place, there was naturally a basis for it. Now wanting to cancel or merge them again, I don’t think that means much. For those sections, people who want to go there will naturally click in and have a look; people who don’t want to go there can simply stay out, and it doesn’t interfere with anything. Someone once suggested removing the LFS section on Linux Eden. The opinion I gave was that although LFS has few posts, few users, and a poor ranking on distrowatch, LFS has an irreplaceable status. For that reason alone, you can’t remove it. Up to today, not a single distribution has been able to replace the position of LFS.

Likewise, some things are history, and they are also part of the site’s character. For example, Seekfor’s DOS: I don’t have time to study it either, but that section has already been created, and there are already posts in it. Other people may also come to this site to look up those discussions, so it’s best not to move things around casually.

I don’t have the time or energy to be a moderator. I’m developing grub4dos, handling BUG reports, reading email, writing the wiki, writing a blog, and I also have to come to the forum often to take a look. Look at my wiki—I don’t have time to update it; look at my blog too—I haven’t gone to look at it for a long time either. Where would I still have any free time at my own disposal? If I had any time left, that would be to get a good sleep. If some website were to assign me as a moderator without my consent, I might leave that place.

If nobody volunteers to be moderator, the position can simply remain vacant. Everyone is willing to help themselves and help each other.
