After school today I got home, put down my schoolbag, and wanted to come take a look at the forum. So I turned on the computer's power. Everything went smoothly before entering the desktop, but when it was about to enter the desktop, the computer actually told me there was a memory address error while loading Explorer.exe. I thought, how is that possible!! I had just turned it on this morning, and there was no problem!! I restarted it again, but the result was still the same. I still couldn't believe it, so I tried again and again, about five times or so, and got the same result every time...... Then I tried reinstalling WINDOWS 98, and after installing it, it was still the same.... It made me so mad... In the end I could only switch to another hard disk..... Sigh... what a miserable day.....

Explorer.exe is the file manager program; it manages the entire desktop system.

You might as well try changing Shell=Explorer.exe in SYSTEM.INI to Shell=C:\COMMAND.COM.

I think that if there is nothing after “Shell=”, then after the system starts up it will just be an empty desktop and you won't be able to do anything. But as for whether “COMMAND.COM” has this setting item, I'm not sure.

Waaah~~~ I changed it, but after booting up it only shows an "MS-DOS mode" window!! How do I change it so the desktop appears!! Everyone please help!! Thanks!!

You can run DOS or WIN programs by entering commands in the DOS window! For example, try: NOTEPAD, WRITE, and so on.
