1. First, partitioning.
My usual partitioning habit is:
Drive C, 1G for win98
Drive D, 3G for win2000
Drive E, 2G for software
Drive F, 2G as a temporary folder
Drive G, 10G as a games drive
Drive H, 10G for work and study
Drive I, 2G as a backup drive
Also, use deamon to emulate a CD-ROM drive as drive J
Then connect a COMBO burner as a CD-ROM drive as drive K
2. Install the 98 system.
1. First install win98. After that, install the motherboard drivers, DMA driver, graphics card and sound card drivers.
2. Upgrade win98, including installing WMP8.1, DX8.1a, IE6.0sp1, then go to windowsdateup to upgrade all kinds of patches.
3. Delete everything that can be deleted, and trim the registry.
4. Set this hard drive as a slave drive, boot from another hard drive, delete its virtual memory file (win386.swp), then defragment it.
5. Reboot to DOS, then use ghost to back it up.
3. Install the 2000 system
1. Boot again from this hard drive and install the win2000 system. What I chose here is win2000 server (english) +SP3.
2. Install drivers.
3. Upgrade. Install WMP9.0, IE6.0SP1, DX9.0a, then go to windowsdateup to upgrade all kinds of patches.
4. Set this hard drive as a slave drive, boot from another hard drive into DOS, and use ghost to make a backup.
5. Boot again from this hard drive and install some necessary software.
What necessary means here is: 1. What you absolutely need to use, what you want to use.
2. What absolutely must be installed. If it isn't installed, it can't be used.
What I installed:
1. MSN5.0 + MSN helper I like using MSN more than QQ
2. realplayer plus 8.0 Necessary for playing realplay files. And I added the plugin upgrade pack. I didn't choose realone here, because it's too big. And it uses a lot of resources too.
3. webcatcher 3.51 Web Page Catcher, helps me save wonderful web pages.
4. Acrobat 5.01 Necessary for reading PDF files
5. moneyhome My financial manager
6. wittime Jidian Word Breakthrough, useful for memorizing words
7. ssreader3.61 Superstar Reader. I installed this to read the Superstar books I downloaded before; now they can no longer be downloaded. 55555....
8. dvdidle pro 1.06 Since mine is a COMBO drive and can read DVDs, of course I have to use this thing that claims to extend DVD life by 2 to 9 times. And this pro version comes with region cracking, so I can watch all DVDs without changing the DVD region code.
9. winamp2.90 b2 Since some things absolutely must be installed, I installed it anyway. Originally winamp can be used without installation. But some plugins need it installed.
10. powerDVD Since I have DVD, of course I need this DVD player.
11. Nero How could I do without it when I have a burner?
12. Deamon The best virtual CD-ROM drive software.

6. After installing, go to DOS again and make another backup.
7. Then install office XP SP2. I'm using a cracked version.
10. Go to DOS again and make another backup.
11. Optimize the system. Disable unnecessary services, and optimize the system according to other people's optimization experience.
12. Trim everything that can be trimmed.
13. Go to DOS and make another backup.
14. Reboot once. Try whether all the software can still be used! Don't trim so much that the system becomes unusable!!!
15. If not, go back to the backup state made in step 10. Redo steps 11, 12, 13, and 14.
4. Install other software
Install all of it on drive E.

Not finished. to be continued

Continued:
The software installed on drive E is the real key point I want to introduce. These are all programs that I think are very useful, and most of them are green software. Even if some can't be counted as green software, at least they are quasi-green software. The advantage of this software is that it does not have to be placed on the system drive, and after reinstalling the system there is no need to reinstall it before it can be used.
I don't rename the directory on drive E either; I just call it program files directly. That way, when installing software, I only need to change the drive letter.
These are the programs on my E drive:
ACD Systems This is the very familiar image viewer acdsee. What I chose here is the 4.0 Chinese-localized trimmed version. The bundled editor FotoCanvas that comes with ACDSEE is fairly powerful, so I kept it. Everything else was deleted.
Advanced Find and Replace An extremely powerful text find-and-replace tool. It can use a search method similar to AltaVista to search and replace whole paragraphs of text in multiple documents. 1.50 Chinese-localized cracked version
Advanced System Agent Advanced System Assistant. 2.77 cracked version.
bdc We All Love Memorizing Words version 1.01. Includes a registration code extractor.
ChiBa2003 Kingsoft PowerWord 2003 trimmed version
Cterm BBS Express
cxwread Simple full-text translation
EditPlus 2 Enhanced editor. 2.11 Chinese-localized version. (includes registration code)
FlashGet 1.4 Chinese edition. Includes keygen.
Foxmail 4.2 Chinese edition.
IrfanView 2.80 Chinese edition An image viewer. It can compete with ACDSEE.
MyIE2 Enhanced MYIE. Multi-page web browser. IE kernel.
netradio Tornado Internet Radio.
NoteXPad Enhanced text editor. (a work by dreamtheater)
oai Universal Translation gives explanations for entered unfamiliar words in another language (for now it can mutually translate among Chinese, Japanese, and English).
poet Chinese Poetry Ningning Edition
readbook E-book reader. 1.50 enhanced version. Includes keygen.
Serials 2000 Serial number lookup tool. 7.2 Chinese-localized version
speak Duba. A little thing that can read Chinese text aloud.
Tencent QQ. There are still many people who contact others through QQ, so I still keep one copy of QQ.
TotalCmd I think this is the best file manager. 5.51 Chinese cracked version. Comes with many plugins. Powerful beyond belief.
TouchNet Browser Another multi-page web browser. Also uses the IE kernel.
TypeEasy Easy Wubi version 3.0. Small file, major features. And it's free.
TypingMaster Famous English typing training software. Version 6.20, includes registration code.
UltraEdit Famous editor. Can do everything. 10.00B simplified/traditional/English three-language all-in-one version, includes registration code
UPX UPX Graphical is a visual Windows GUI for UPX. It includes the latest UPX1.24 built in, letting ordinary users completely stay away from the boring command-line method. You only need to use the default options in the graphical interface to compress, extract, encode, and so on for executable files, making UPX much simpler and more intuitive to use.
wbztc Wubi Express V3.0 includes registration code
Winamp 2.90 beta2 Chinese-localized version. And updated with quite a few plugins.
WINHEX Famous hex editor. 10.27 SR-1 Chinese-localized cracked version
WINIMAGE WinImage is a program that can make files or folders into Image files. It can directly split image files into several pieces for storage onto A drive diskettes, and supports image files, non-standard format disks, and 1.68M Microsoft DMF format disks.
WINISO WinISO is an extremely powerful CD tool. It can convert CD-ROM image file formats, and can directly edit CD image files! It also directly supports bootable CDs. 5.3 Chinese edition. Includes registration code.
WinRAR Famous compression/extraction software. 3.0 Chinese cracked version.
wps2000 Kingsoft WPS2000 trimmed version.
Timetable v4.5.4 Train timetable lookup.

All of the above software can be used after a system reinstall without reinstalling it.
Since the registration information for some software is written into the registry, after reinstalling the system it has to be registered again. So I export the registration information and place it in each software directory. For software that requires registration, I only need to import the registration information again.

Since most of my software is installed on drive E, my system partitions are relatively small. (Drive C 1G, drive D 3G.) Also, because my systems are optimized and simplified, many things are moved to drive F (temp) (temporary files drive), such as cookies,
Desktop, Favorites, History, Recent, Temporary Internet Files, and also the page file win386.swp are not on drives C or D, so drives C and D can be made smaller. That way they won't be too slow to defragment, and the backups won't be too large either. My drive C has 720M of free space left, which means the whole windows98 uses about 270M of space. Drive D has more than 1.5G of free space left. My C drive backup file size is 142M (win98min.gho), and the D drive backup file size is 475M (win2ke05.gho), so the two backup files can be burned onto a single CD. Hehe... And the tools on my E drive (since there are about 115M of Superstar-format books, about 180M of real human voice files (English words), 30M of Kingsoft PowerWord dictionaries, 80M of Universal Translation dictionaries, and about 50M of email, it's relatively large) take up a total of 670M, though in reality it's only about 321M. So, if I want to burn drive E directly to a CD, I can do that too. Or I can trim it down a little more, then back it up with ghost and put it on a CD as well.

For personal users, if you aren't fanatically obsessed with upgrading, and your hardware doesn't undergo any major changes for quite a long time, you can absolutely set up your system like this yourself, make the backups, then burn them. Later when you need to reinstall the system, you won't have to go through so much trouble.
System and software, all taken care of!

Too many partitions. My partitions: C: 3G for 2000, D: 3G for temporary data, swap files, etc.
E: 74G for: Backup/Book/Games/Media/Setup(...)/Tools/Temp/Tools/User
The basic system is only 2000. Inside 2000 I install VPC, then install 98, 2003, Linux, DOS, WIN3.11.....

Very organized, gave me a lot of ideas.
A few questions:
1. Can't win386.swp be deleted under DOS? Why do you need to boot from another hard drive?
2. Can you provide some ideas for trimming the system? For example, what can be deleted without affecting the system?
3. Is your software installed only under 2000? Or did you install it once in both systems?

ko, there's no need to defragment before ghost. Just clone it directly, then restore it back. When you look at the disk then, there won't be any fragmentation. It saves quite a bit of time. I really just can't stand the speed of defragmentation.

The image cloned by ghost has no fragmentation.

And another thing? Without a floppy drive, how do you extract the files inside an IMG, like the kind made by Hd-copy!!!
-----------------------------------------------Looks like I've asked a lot of questions, not sure whether anyone will pay attention to me----------------------------

You can use Winimage to unpack it and extract it into a hard drive directory.
Or you can also use undiskw to unpack it. Because some img files I can't open with Winimage, but I can with undiskw.

These 2 programs are green software; just extract them and you can use them.
