I want to put a few lines in the autoexec.bat on a Win98 boot disk to call a program on the CD.

There is a simple way:
First assign a drive letter to the CD-ROM drive, then add the path.
For example:
If you want to use KV3000.EXE on the CD-ROM
add /L:X to the end of the MSCDEX.EXE ...... line in autoexec.bat
and finally add: X:\KV3000.EXE
X can be replaced with some other letter.
This method is simple, fast, and reliable, and saves the time of searching for the drive letter.

This method is not necessarily reliable either. For example, if the system already has an X: drive, then wouldn't it fail?

Why is it troublesome with dual CD-ROM drives or multiple CD-ROM drives? Taking the FINDCD program I modified as an example, using FINDCD 2 can put the drive letter of the second CD-ROM drive into %CDROM%.
