What software do we use the most in everyday life? Not QQ, not RealPlayer or winamp, and certainly not IE, but the platform on which all kinds of application software run—the operating system. For ordinary users, the most familiar operating system is undoubtedly Microsoft Windows, but how much do you really know about its many versions? Here, I’ll introduce several commonly used versions of Microsoft Windows:

◆Windows 98
Windows 98 is a 32-bit operating system built on and improved from Windows 95. At the time, it had the best performance, ran quite fast, was fairly easy to use, connected well with the Internet, and supported the most advanced hardware technologies and entertainment platforms of that era. Looking at it today, Windows 98 has this flaw or that flaw, such as confused memory management, poor stability, low security, mediocre performance, and so on. But whether you like it or not, you have to admit that Windows 9X is currently the most widely used operating system, and its plug-and-play functions and simple user interface were both innovations at the time.
Windows 98 does not demand much from hardware. As long as you have a Pentium MMX200 or better CPU and 64M of memory, it can run very smoothly. Therefore, it is very suitable as the operating system for low-spec PCs.

◆Windows ME
The full name of Windows Me is Microsoft Windows Millennium Edition. It is the last version of the Windows 9x operating system developed by Microsoft, so some people also call it the third edition of Windows 98. Windows Me still uses mixed 16-bit and 32-bit kernel code (that is, the Windows 9x core), but it removed "real-mode DOS" and combined some of the outward framework of Windows 2000, making improvements over Windows 98 in many respects.
The interface design of Windows Me was modeled after that of Windows 2000. It integrates Windows 2000’s attractive desktop shell and uses "smart menu" technology, making the whole operating interface feel more refined, simpler, and clearer.
Compared with Win9x operating systems, Windows Me further improved multimedia processing and gaming functions by integrating Windows Media Player7 and DirectX 7.1.
Windows Me is much better than Windows 98 in hardware and software support, and can stably support more hardware and software. It provides broader support for hardware technologies and peripherals, such as universal serial bus (USB) storage, 5-button mice, Internet keyboards, digital cameras, and new scanners. At the same time, the installation wizards used when installing various hardware devices are similar to the intelligent wizards in Windows 2000, with multiple installation methods to choose from. This simplifies the installation process for adding PC peripherals and makes it easier for home users to expand their PCs’ capabilities.
Windows Me strengthened system functions, further optimized software programs, corrected some errors in Windows 98, and added some control components aimed at system stability, so its stability is much better than that of Windows 98.
Generally speaking, Windows Me is an operating system with fairly complete functionality, but like win 98, its stability still cannot satisfy people, and it also has shortcomings in security. In addition, the imperfect "System Restore" function and its tendency to devour hard disk space are also much criticized.
Windows Me has slightly higher hardware requirements than Windows 98, but it can definitely run on most PCs. Its decent-looking interface, strong hardware and software support, rich multimedia features, and powerful gaming functions are still quite attractive to ordinary computer users, and it is also very suitable as a home PC operating system.

◆Windows NT
The NT in Windows NT is the abbreviation of "New Technology." Windows NT is a network operating system, including two categorized versions, Server and Workstation, and their latest version at present is 4.0.
Windows NT uses a graphical operating interface consistent with Windows, while internally integrating dedicated administrative wizards, which makes its administration and maintenance very convenient.
Windows NT has quite high security. The NTFS file system it uses is based on protecting file and directory data. On an NTFS partition, each file or folder can be assigned a separate permission. This permission gives these resources a higher level of security. Whether users access resources with NTFS permissions locally or through a remote network, they must have permission to access those resources, which greatly enhances system security.
Windows NT uses a 32-bit address space and multitasking. Since the 32-bit address space supports memory addressing space up to 4GB, it can run application programs with higher performance and faster speed; and multitasking allows multiple tasks to run in parallel, greatly reducing the possibility of crashes caused by task blocking. All this gives Windows NT very high performance.
Windows NT Server integrates IIS (Internet Information Server), which makes the process of establishing Web sites on the Internet or a local area network faster and more efficient, while the integrated indexing server and FrontPage make content indexing and the creation and management of Web sites easier. Windows NT supports remote access services, allowing users to remotely access Windows NT servers through telephone lines, ISDN, ADSL, etc., greatly facilitating users’ work.
Windows NT has always been famous for its stability, and for users deeply troubled by the blue screens and crashes of win9x operating systems, it is undoubtedly very attractive. But after all, it is only a network operating system and is not suitable for ordinary computer users. As a network operating system, its security and functions already seem unable to keep up with the development of the times, and Microsoft’s decision to stop releasing patch packages for it has undoubtedly accelerated its decline. It is destined to be replaced by Windows 2000 and Windows XP.

◆Windows 2000 Professional
Windows 2000 Professional (windows2000 Professional edition) was developed from Windows NT Workstation 4.0 (Windows NT Workstation version 4.0), and is a new-generation operating system specially developed for all kinds of desktop users and mobile users. It inherits the advanced technology of Windows NT and provides a high level of security, stability, and system performance. At the same time, it makes using computers, installing and configuring the system, working offline, and using the Internet easier for users.
Because Windows 2000 Professional uses the Windows NT kernel, it can dynamically allocate and reclaim system resources, thereby effectively avoiding system crashes. Its built-in "Task Manager" also has powerful functions and can smoothly close programs that have stopped responding without affecting any other programs. All this gives Windows 2000 Professional extremely high stability.
Windows 2000 Professional comes with a very large driver library, which gives it excellent hardware compatibility. Its hardware detection capability is also very powerful: it can automatically detect hardware devices at every startup and update the hardware list. As for software compatibility, although many programs tailor-made for Win9x cannot be used under Windows 2000 Professional, most commonly used software such as ACDSee, Winamp, winzip, etc. can still run normally. Although it integrates Windows Media Player 7 and DirectX 7.0, as a business operating system, Windows 2000 Professional is not very strong in multimedia processing and gaming, and is even inferior to Windows Me in that regard.
Like Windows NT, Windows 2000 Professional has quite high stability, and at the same time its compatibility is also quite good. However, because of its fairly high hardware requirements and its weaker multimedia and gaming performance, it is more suitable for business users than for ordinary users.

◆Windows XP
The XP in Windows XP stands for "experience." It is the latest operating system released by Microsoft, and also the most outstanding operating system in Microsoft’s history, with higher performance and more advanced features than other Windows operating systems. Windows XP is built on the enhanced code base of Windows 2000, and provides different product versions aimed at home users and business users: Windows XP Home Edition and Windows XP Professional. Windows XP Home Edition offers the best platform for digital media and is the best choice for home users and game players; Windows XP Professional is designed for enterprise users and provides the highest level of scalability and reliability.
Windows XP uses an interface similar to Windows Me, making extensive use of bright blue, orange, and green, and the sizes of icons, buttons, and fonts have all been increased, giving the overall style a softer feel. Its logon interface has been redesigned, appearing in a form similar to MSN Explorer and becoming friendlier, while the desktop has become simpler and the Start menu more user-friendly.
Windows XP integrates more networking functions, and network setup has also become simpler. Because it includes a built-in Internet firewall, network security has been greatly improved. Although the integrated version of IE6.0 is the newest, the preferred browser in Windows XP is the new MSN Explorer, which supports more comprehensive WEB standards.
Windows XP borrowed many design ideas from Windows Me and Apple, which gives it more powerful multimedia and gaming functions. The DirectX version included with Windows XP is 8.1, bringing stronger multimedia and gaming support, while the upgraded Media Player 8.0 brings more entertainment features.
Because Windows XP uses the kernel code of Windows 2000 and adds some stability-enhancing functions, its stability has improved greatly. It can run stably for several days or even several weeks, and the number of crashes is greatly reduced compared with previous Windows 9X systems.
Windows XP has fairly strong compatibility, and most programs can run normally. Even application programs that may not be compatible with Windows XP can work under the "compatibility mode" it provides.
No matter from which angle you look at it, Windows XP is very attractive, and its current popularity also shows this. However, its hardware requirements are simply too high (to fully enjoy the functions of Windows XP, you need at least an 800MHz CPU and 256M of memory), and this has made quite a lot of users keep their distance from Windows XP.
