After several years on the Internet, I've seen many excellent websites go under, and every time it makes me sad. But after seeing it happen so many times, I've summed up the pattern of development for personal websites:

Startup: not much content, and not much traffic either, but the webmaster's enthusiasm is at its highest, working tirelessly every day to increase traffic.
Peak: rich content attracts countless newbies, who spend all day asking for this and that in a perfectly matter-of-fact tone, urging here and demanding there, while the webmaster also has to face all kinds of pressure such as hosting space, so the enthusiasm starts to fade and the anger starts to rise.
Collapse: everything falls apart, and nobody gets what they want.
In view of this, my personal website has neither a counter nor a guestbook, just so I can keep my eyes clean and my mind at peace.

If there isn't a counter, then the site won't know its traffic, so...
