After removing it, it simply hangs right at the menu, and I can't even see the LOGO anymore. Does that mean my machine can only run without loading EMM386? But if I load only HIMEM, will that be very bad for memory management?

Could you be a bit more specific? Do you mean the NOEMS option of EMM386?

Yes, the noems option. But I don't know what will happen if I add ram.

Then try adding it. EMM386 may have some compatibility problems with a few systems.

After loading UMBPCI, does it only load HIMEM into upper memory? What is the point of loading HIMEM into upper memory? What is the difference compared with loading it into conventional memory? My motherboard seems incompatible with UMBPCI. Does that mean there's no solution?

UMBPCI will load all programs, including HIMEM, into upper memory. If neither EMM386 nor UMBPCI works, then you'll just have to try something like QEMM386.
