I wonder if anyone else has run into this situation.

This is exactly a BUG in the virtual machine. In the “System Requirements” section of the readme for my MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk, there is a passage like this:

Note: This boot disk is best used in real mode, and should not be used in a virtual machine (especially Virtual PC),
because BUGs in them (the virtual machines) themselves can cause this boot disk to fail to boot properly.

Since it's virtual, there are still some differences from real mode after all...

The boot disk compatibility is not very good.
A virtual machine emulates some particular hardware. For example, VMWARE 4.0 emulates INTEL 440BX, plus some other things. Is it possible that on a real platform like that there would also be this kind of problem? Also, virtual machines emulate very general hardware, and they usually sacrifice performance in pursuit of compatibility.
Now when I make boot disks, I always test them in a virtual machine first. If they don't work in the virtual machine, then I switch to another implementation method.
For example, using MEMDISK to emulate a WINME boot disk won't boot in VMWARE 4.0, but if I switch to DISKEMU, there is no such problem.
The following is quoted from Master Rushi on 2003-5-6 12:32:00:

But I tested it on a real Intel 4x0BX computer and it could boot. It just doesn't work in the virtual machine.

Wenger should really take a good look at this opinion. My real-time Chinese-localized boot disk never had problems before, but now on 845 boards I've really run into several setbacks, and I'm actively revising it right now......

All right, I will make some menu options to improve compatibility with all systems.

My MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk actually can run in VMWare (at least the first option has no problem), I've tested it.

Thanks, everyone. I've learned quite a bit more again. When I have time I'll definitely give everyone's messages a good read, 3x a lot
