Every time I exit MASM611's graphical editor PWB, this appears:

unable to restore screen image

Then it drops to the DOS environment and shows a memory allocation error message:

memory allocation error
cannot load COMMAND, system halted

Then it hangs. I have 256 MB of memory. The result from MEM is roughly as follows:

Total Conventional Upper
650k 609k 41k

A typical old software problem. From my testing, I found that this is a BUG in PWB itself, probably because back then memory was still quite small. If free XMS memory is greater than 32MB, PWB will have this problem. The solution is to use software like XMSDSK to reduce free XMS memory to below 32MB before running it.

I followed wengier's method and reduced the memory to a bit over 10 MB before running it, and then it worked. It really felt satisfying While thanking the two moderators, I still have to trouble you with two more questions:

1. Before installing MSDOS71, I once tried installing FREEDOS 8H1. The installation went smoothly, and there were also the two files kernel.sys and command.com in the root directory, but after rebooting the system the boot failed with " freedos kernel go! " and I don't know why.
2. My USB mouse also can't be driven http://www2.zzu.edu.cn/ie/newdos/dispbbs.asp?boardID=11&ID=2321 I'm puzzled...

I think it might be an MBR problem. Try using fdisk/mbr, then install freedos once more and see.

Dark-Destroy: I use third-party software to boot XP, LINUX, and DOS systems, so... hehe, it's just that I don't quite understand why under the same circumstances MSDOS can boot but FREEDOS can't.
