Don't load anything in autoexec.bat and config.sys. After booting DOS, directly execute ntfs4dos and then give it a try.

There are many problems with DOS emulated by VMWare, and I have deeply experienced this. The latest version is also like this. As for the DOS emulated by VPC, I haven't played with it, so I can't say.
