My computer seems to be infected with a virus (probably CIH). I can't enter DOS with the Win98 boot disk. The machine has no response after the self-test. There is no response from the hard disk and floppy drive at all. What could be the reason for this? Thanks for the answer!! Before, it seemed to prompt that there were bad sectors on the hard disk (it suddenly froze when surfing the Internet, and then couldn't boot again when restarting. The Win98 boot disk couldn't enter DOS either. This situation has never happened before. I'm afraid the virus has caused physical damage to the motherboard or hard disk. I hope all the brothers can help!!

It might be a logic lock. Try booting with my instant Chinese localization boot disk.

I think it looks more like a virus, because it happened suddenly while surfing the Internet. May I ask, can you enter the BIOS setup?

But I put my hard drive on my friend's computer, and I can enter DOS with the Win98 boot disk. But when I format the C drive, the machine seems to say there are bad sectors (I can't understand it clearly). Then the hard drive automatically checks itself~ And it's quite slow! I quit before it finished and wanted to deal with it slowly at home. But when I got home, this hard drive couldn't enter DOS on my computer... 5555~` Why is this?

You can enter the BIOS setup!!
It was an incident that happened on the night of April 25th, actually it was around the early morning of the 26th~ I think it should be a virus infection. Now what should I do? I'm a novice, and I might not fully understand what you guys said. Hope you can tell me specifically what to do. Thanks a lot!! |

April 26th is the outbreak period of the malicious virus CIH! Can you still enter the BIOS setup now?

I have modified the system time, 5555~ still didn't escape!!
Now I can still enter (because I'm a newbie, I only know to press del to enter the settings when booting, I don't know if it's BIOS settings or what CMOS settings, I don't understand it very well~ There are many things in it that I don't understand~) |

This is hard to explain clearly. We can only use the elimination method to find out whether the problem is on the mainboard or the hard drive. Only after determining the problem can we apply the right remedy...

Can you describe in detail from power-on to the final situation?

At first, the computer froze when surfing the Internet. Then when I restarted, I couldn't boot into Win98. I estimated it was infected with a virus because there wasn't much on my C drive. I was going to format the C drive and reinstall the system. There were some files on my desktop. I first used the Win98 boot disk to enter the C drive and copied these files to the E drive. Then I originally wanted to format immediately, but then I thought maybe antivirus would fix it without formatting. I used Kav9x to kill the virus (I installed Kingsoft Antivirus), but it prompted that it couldn't run under DOS. Then I accidentally ran Kavdx, and it seemed like the computer started virus scanning. I took a look and then exited. Then I restarted the computer (without inserting the boot disk), and "scandisk" appeared (it seemed like that). I waited and then got a prompt that it seemed like the hard drive couldn't be found (I don't understand much, that's the general meaning). Then I pressed Enter and the machine continued to boot to my desktop (I thought it was okay because the things on the desktop appeared, just like normal boot). But after 2 seconds, it froze. The mouse could move but couldn't be clicked. Then a bunch of various error prompts appeared (many prompt boxes), and it couldn't be operated, so I could only restart. Then I was going to format, but I couldn't enter with the Win98 boot disk. After the machine self-tested, the floppy drive light was on, proving it was reading the disk, but after a few seconds, there was no response. The hard drive also had no response, just stopped there, and it's been like that all the time. The next day I went to a classmate's place to fix it (because I don't understand, I'm a novice). The classmate first hung my hard drive and his hard drive at the same time (my hard drive was the slave drive), but my hard drive couldn't be found. Then with only my hard drive left, the classmate could enter DOS with the Win98 boot disk. But when formatting the hard drive to 3%, it prompted that there seemed to be bad sectors on the hard drive, and then it started automatic detection. Because it took too long, I exited halfway. (At this time, the classmate didn't know what to do either. He wanted to low-level format. I said to take a look again, in case it could be solved without destroying the data.) And I thought my Win boot disk was problematic, so I made a new one. Then I was going home to try it and see. (And at this time, the classmate's hard drive also prompted bad sectors. When I left, the classmate was still detecting.) But after going home, I still couldn't enter DOS, the same as before, stopped at self-test and didn't move. And when I didn't insert the boot disk to boot, after self-test, a prompt message appeared (I can't remember clearly, it seemed like there were words like CD-ROM, DMI. I'll check when I get home and write it down again.) That's the specific thing. What might be the reason? What should I do? I want to try low-level formatting, but I'm afraid that if it's not a hard drive problem, all the data inside will be lost. I heard that CIH can cause physical damage to the hard drive and motherboard. So I want to ask you all. I'm almost an idiot about BIOS and CMOS. So if you need me to make changes to the settings of these things, please teach me specifically. Thank you everyone!!!

You are quite modest, but you didn't get to the point, and still didn't explain many issues. I can only explain step by step for you. There's no need to explain the principle in detail, and you won't use complex tool software. First, boot your computer with my instant Chinese localization startup disk. If it can boot, it means the motherboard is not a big problem. Because the core file of my startup disk is rom-dos, and the hard disk lock can't lock it. Try it and let me know the situation, then proceed to the next step...

Thanks, thanks. I just don't understand how to use your boot disk. I don't know. I only know that I can make a Win98 boot disk under Add/Remove Programs in Win98. I don't understand how to use yours. I hope you can teach me specifically. Thank you!
Indeed, for a noob like me, I don't know how to use many software tools, let alone the principles. So please be patient to teach me. It's really bothering you!!!!! |

The self - extracting one is in 1.44M format, and you can use it by extracting it to a floppy disk.

I downloaded it in zip format. After I extracted it, it's an .img file. I copied this file to a floppy disk, but it prompted that the capacity was insufficient. Is this the way to operate???

Not that. The recently uploaded self-extracting file is in 1.44M format. The other 1.68 full version needs to use hd-copy.
