By the way, I remember the Pentium Pro already included the MMX instruction set.....

The Pentium Pro was aimed at servers,
it integrated 256k of L2, but it just didn't have MMX, so in floating-point it still lost to the Pentium MMX

I forgot to mention, the Pentium Pro and PIII cores are exactly the same!
Roughly speaking they're both PII architecture!
It's just that the PIII went through quite a bit of optimization!

MMX is not a floating-point unit!
Processors above the Pentium already had two integer execution units!
In order to make full use of these two integer execution units,
Intel added 56 instructions outside the X86 and X87 instruction sets,
these 56 instructions can let the processor's two integer execution units run calculations at the same time,
to speed up processing; these 56 instructions are the MMX instructions,
so you can see that it only helps improve performance for integer calculations!
And among the two integer execution units in the Pentium,
only one had full integer computing capability!
The other only had partial integer computing capability,
and the two integer execution units shared one set of registers,
so conflicts were still possible,
and that was also one shortcoming of the early Pentium processors!
