If the BIOS of the mainboard does not support it, USB booting is impossible. If the conditions are met, you can boot by using "sys X:".

I have just made a directly bootable external hard drive (my motherboard is 845G, which supports USB-HDD). But I encountered the following problems during use:
1. First, after booting with the Super Universal MS-DOS Boot Disk V7.10 and entering the command "ADDEV DUSE.EXE DRIVES=2", the external hard drive can be recognized. But after using FDISK to delete the partitions of this hard drive, re-establish a DOS partition and set it as active, then exit (not formatted yet), when I return to check this external hard drive, actually the original files of the external hard drive still exist, and the hard drive capacity changes from the original 2G to 8G, and then entering FDISK to check also shows that the capacity of this external hard drive is 8G.
2. After the above operation, booting into WINDOW 98SE, I found that this external hard drive is not accessible. Then I formatted it and transferred the system files, and checking shows that the capacity of this external hard drive is still 8G. Restarting WIN98 can directly use this external hard drive as a boot disk.
3. Starting WINDOW 2000 Service Pack3 again, I found that WIN2000 cannot format this external hard drive and shows that the capacity is unknown capacity, but in the Computer Management - Disk Management in the Control Panel, the capacity of this mobile can be correctly recognized as 2G.
After testing, the final solution is as follows:
1. Boot into Window 2000 Service or Window XP Professional, delete all original partitions of the external hard drive in the Computer Management - Disk Management in the Control Panel, then re-establish partitions and mark them as active partitions, and then this external hard drive can be successfully formatted.
2. Boot into Windows 98 again, select "Only copy system files" in the format hard drive option, and everything is done. At this moment, using this external hard drive can directly boot the system. (Note: Do not use SYS to transfer system files under DOS)
Other: FDISK and PowerQuest PartitionMagic 8.0 do not support external hard drives well, and errors will occur during the partitioning process. I wish everyone can also have an external hard drive boot disk soon, which is quite convenient for installing a new computer.
