The DOS in NT and 2000 is just a shell, not the real DOS system.

It's not correct to say it's a DOS shell either

Pure DOS means booting the computer with DOS, such as pure MS-DOS 1.0, 2.0, up to 8.0, pure PC-DOS, pure ROM-DOS, etc. And emulated DOS means first entering another non-DOS operating system, and then it provides functions similar to the DOS interface and operation, that is, virtual DOS.

Then how should I put it? And what exactly is different about its simulation method?

Microprocessors above 386 have three working modes, namely real mode, protected mode, and virtual 86 mode.
DOS 622 works in real mode (8086). Windows works in protected mode. To be compatible with 8086 in protected mode, Intel also provides the virtual 86 mode so that under the Windows platform, both 32-bit programs and MSDOS programs can be run. MSDOS programs in protected mode run in virtual 86 mode, but the memory addressing method is the same as that of 8086, which is also 1MB. |

For a simulated DOS, it depends on the simulation ability of this system. Some are simulated well, some are simulated poorly. Just like current game simulators, which simulate the original game consoles to play games, but the simulation effects are different from each other.
