I got the news half a month ago. According to my understanding, the specific situation is like this:
On June 28th, which was the 12th anniversary of the birth of FreeDOS, Jim Hall, the founder of FreeDOS, suddenly posted a message on the homepage of FreeDOS announcing that "FreeDOS Is Dead". In this message, he said that FreeDOS has been around for 12 years since its birth, but it has always been in beta version until now, and there is not even a shadow of version 1.0. Moreover, the updated FreeDOS software has been getting fewer and fewer recently, and there has been almost no update since 2006, so FreeDOS is dead. After the message was released, it attracted the attention of some developers. For a while, everyone had various opinions about this situation. Later, Jim Hall had to make some clarifications under everyone's request. While expressing some pessimistic emotions, he also indicated that FreeDOS has not died yet. At this time, a developer named Blair said to Jim Hall that he had been preparing the FreeDOS 1.0 pre version, that is, the pre-release beta version recently. Then Jim Hall immediately said that just treat this pre version as the 1.0 release, and it would be on July 28th, which is just one month later. Thus, FreeDOS 1.0 was scheduled to be officially launched on July 28th. |

Many lazy developers came back because of the time limit, and everyone was working hard. Can't help but vent with "Monday morning quarterback", I had already said in that discussion area a long time ago that FreeDOS needs a leader, a target time... Helpless, it took so long to have movement! Version 1.0 has been talked about for many years, don't delay any longer!! |

But now FreeDOS still has many bugs. Is it... to release 1.0 so soon...

The most problematic ISO disk image has also changed hands to a new maintainer. It's just that Defrag still doesn't support FAT32, which is rather annoying. There are still some problems with HIMEM/EMM386 that haven't been fixed after repeated changes. |

When FreeCOM supports long filenames, I can start to consider gradually phasing out M$-DOS...

Until today, which is more than a month later than the original plan, in early September, FreeDOS 1.0 was finally released.

Um. .. Haven't been here for a long time. .. It's already 1.0. .. I'll come down to see how it works that day. .. See if 32-bit support is more stable
