Theo de Raadt, founder of the open-source OpenBSD system, recently said that the Linux operating system is getting more and more trashy, filled with a large amount of redundant code, and should be cleaned up as soon as possible. In a recent interview with a Forbes reporter, Theo de Raadt said: “Linux is getting pretty bad now. Even though a lot of people are using it, they don’t realize how bad it really is. Linux developers only know how to keep adding code, and never go back to inspect and fix it. It’s garbage and needs to be fixed as soon as possible.” De Raadt also added that compared with OpenBSD, Linux is of much lower quality. OpenBSD is an open-source UNIX operating system, and it is quite favored by system administrators. In an earlier interview with ZDNet, De Raadt said that through strict code review and regularly publishing code updates, the OpenBSD system has always been able to maintain its quality. Before this, various survey reports had all given Linux’s code quality high praise. According to a survey result released last December by the code analysis company Coverity, among 5.7 million lines of code, the Linux kernel had only 985 bugs, while other commercial systems of the same scale had as many as 5,000 bugs. At the same time, De Raadt also criticized hardware vendors such as HP and IBM, saying that they should develop their own UNIX systems instead of treating the Linux community as free labor. In fact, Jesus Villasante, head of the EU Information Society and Media Directorate, had previously also said that IBM, HP, and Sun treat the open-source community as subcontractors rather than encouraging them to develop independent commercial products. |
