Wengier, you’re so capable—could you do me a favor?
Could you slim down the IO.sys in the Win98 boot disk too, I’d be extremely grateful. |

“So capable,” where? The boot disk made by Win98 is an MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk anyway, and I’ve already “slimmed it down.”

I already knew that, but my Win98 boot disk can’t very well go around showing
that it’s an MS-DOS 7.0 boot disk, can it |

That’s just because wengier modified the display message.

As long as it doesn’t touch the kernel, changing the display message is no big deal. What file manager is used in Shen Jie’s boot disk? wengier uses vc, I use pc+dc. What do you use—can you edit hex files?

But it originally is an MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk, and after slimming it down that’s even more true.

Shen Jie wants to change the display message from msdos7.1 to win98dos, and is asking me how to do it.

Not all that meaningful, it seems.
Of course, as a DIYer, the more completely unrecognizable you can make your stuff, the more satisfying it is, hehe... And taking this chance to learn how to modify binary files is good too. |

I don’t know how to use either vc or pc+dc, I’ve only just learned how to write config and AUTOEXEC.BAT.
I don’t understand assembly either! So I’m asking you to modify it and upload it. After all, it’s a Win98 boot disk, it shouldn’t show up as start with MS-Dos 7.0…… right! People will laugh at it at first glance. |

It’s very simple, I can explain it to you step by step. Doing it yourself is much more interesting. You can do it in a virtual machine. You can browse the web while modifying it. Pretty good. I posted a screenshot under your plmm2 thread—take a look, how does it compare with the one you posted?

“People will laugh at it at first glance”
Why would people laugh at it at first glance? It seems nobody has ever laughed at the MS-DOS 7.10 boot disk I made, right! |

Because what I made is a Win98 boot disk, while what you made is an MS-Dos7.0 boot disk.
If a Win98 boot disk shows that it’s MS-Dos7.0, don’t you think that’s ridiculous? People will definitely think it was just your MS-Dos7.0 boot disk, slightly modified and passed off as something else. Wouldn’t you say so. |

Just call it a Win98 (MS-DOS 7.1) boot disk, that works too! Because a Win98 boot disk doesn’t actually exist (since it can’t boot Win98); it’s really an MS-DOS 7.1 boot disk.

Shen Hao, if you think it’s a WIN 98 boot disk, then you’re mistaken. WIN 98 is only a graphical interface running under MS-DOS 7.1!! If you don’t believe it, run mem/c/p in the DOS window, and you’ll see the two names system and command. That is the best proof that MS-DOS 7.1 exists. Looking further down, you’ll see win and vmm32; those are the main body of WINDOWS. You can also see that win and vmm32 are placed lower than system and command, which further proves that MS-DOS 7.1 starts first and then WINDOWS starts afterward. So there is nothing wrong with wengier’s boot disk showing MS-DOS 7.1. The reason it shows WINDOWS 98 is just one of Microsoft’s tricks~!~

Mm, that explains it pretty clearly.
