I have a question. Whenever people mention a clean boot disk, they always describe it like this. Then if there is an autoexec.bat and
config.sys, but these two files are empty or only contain IF statements and menu options, without loading
anything else at all, does that already make it unclean?

A clean boot disk for upgrading the BIOS

We often see materials saying that when upgrading the BIOS of a motherboard or graphics card, you need to make a clean boot disk. A so-called clean boot diskmeans that apart from the three system files Msdos.sys, Io.sys, and Command.comthis boot disk must not have any other memory-resident programssuch as CD-ROM drivers, Autoexec.bat, Config.sys, and so on. Only in this way will there be no conflict with the system when upgrading the BIOSthus ensuring a successful and reliable BIOS updatesohow do you make a clean boot disk?

Under DOS 7.1, running format a:/s will give you a clean boot disk. A BIOS upgrade needs a clean boot disk because it is meant to prevent accidents during the upgrade process.

In 98, formatting a floppy disk and choosing to copy system files only also works. In practice it's the same as what the previous poster said.
弄花香满衣,掬水月在手。
明月鹭鸟飞, 芦花白马走。
我自一过后,野渡现横舟。
青云碧空在,净瓶水不流。

When I flash the BIOS, most of the time I do it from the hard disk. Only if I have already flashed it badly enough that it won't power up and there is no display do I use a floppy to flash it (that is, a blind flash). Flashing the BIOS from the hard disk is both fast and reliable!
